what a shame - but it does look like a really good effort from Heather.
Was she just outplayed?
I've no idea - obviously Vinci is ranked a lot higher, so you'd expect her to be hard to beat. I wonder if anyone was there today and can tell us about it.

Just that, I think. Philwrig was there today and seemed to think Heather played well, particularly in the 2nd set when she got Vinci bit rattled, but the Italian (who as well as being world no. 20, won the 's-Hertogenbosch WTA event on grass last year, so has some pedigree on the surface) was just a bit too consistent for her.

I was there, but I am not a good technical critic. I don't think Heather was massively out played, it was the more odd mistake that led to a break of serve and on the whole Vinci was good but by no means error free.
In the 2nd set Vinci got upset over an out call in her favour that the umpire then overruled. We agreed with the line judge, and we were close to it. It set heather up for a break point.
Zheng on why she played qualifying (much as we suspected), from the WTA site:
"I had to enter six weeks before, and at the time I was practicing in China and forgot! I wanted to come here anyway though, even if it meant playing in the qualifying. Before Wimbledon it's only two weeks of grass court tournaments."
