no i got a mate of mine in senior sixth to take it out from the library for me on DVD. I would definetely recommend it althoug it is very bizarre and gruesome at times...

Sorry if this is obvious - as it`s an alternative kind of film, will I still be able to find it in Blockbuster etc?

I saw City of God at the Cinema a few years ago - excellent film. Probably the best film of that year. There is another brazilian film, not quite as good called Carandiru - about a prison. Also a Mexican film Y Tu Mama Tambien.

My own personal favourites include:

Three Colours Trilogy (especially Red and Blue), The Double Life of Veronique, La Reine Margot, Il Postino, L'Appartement, La Haine, Thirteen, Maria Full Of Grace, In the Mood For Love, Confidence Trop Intimes, The Barbarian Invasions, Elling, Dirty Pretty Things, Kitchen Stories, Kissing Jessica Stein, Minor Mishaps, Amelie, Talk To Her, Italian For Beginners, Cinema Paradiso, At the Height Of Summer

This year: The Beat My Heart Skipped

The Love Actually team did Four Weddings and a Funeral (very funny, stars Hugh Grant), Notting Hill (also good, Hugh Grant + Julia Roberts)

I`ve seen Amelie and L`Appartement (in after-school French at school). I also liked Etre et Avoir . It was very touching but also amusing in parts.

I saw Etre + Avoir too. More french films Un Coeur En Hiver, Jean de Florette and Manon des Sources, Brotherhood of the Wolf (terrifying). Read My Lips and When the Cats Away are quite good.

More films to watch Hana-Bi (brilliant japanese film), Central Station (another brazilian one), , American Beauty, LA Confidential, The Usual Suspects.

Festen (superb), Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown (spanish), Raise The Red Lantern (China) - there is a whole series of a great Chinese films featuring Gong Li and directed by Zhang Yimou.

Hero and The House Of Flying Daggers are great to look at but not much of a plot.

I also liked The Shawshank Redemption mentioned by Mkkreuk, not watched it 10 times though.

Dr Zhivago, Zulu, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,

My favourite film is Airplane! The funiest film ever made. Ever.

I agree with alot of the films mentioned above. Shawshank Redemption, L.A. Confidential, etc

I don't know much about foreign films but I can recomend 'City of God', it is excellent.

If you are looking for a film with a twist there is a Japanese film called Audition which is also very good and ... memorable.

my look AUdition up...another Japanese film that i thought was amazing was Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. although there are a few drawbacks

a) You wont like it unless u have palyed the games and ur unlikely to enjoy the games if ur not a child - although there are many adults who are caught by its stunning graphics

b) Its in japanese so subtitles are required (unless u can speak the lingo)

c) not in most cinemas
