RE: Week 21 - Roland Garros women's qualifying

Laura now also has an impressive 12-3 record in all Grand Slam qualies (and two of those losses were from winning positions).

Does anyone know anything about her next opponent Laura Thorpe, particularly why she has a very un-French name.

After todays results I am feeling fairly confident about tomorrow with both Heather and Laura's opponents outside the top 200.

It was on the actual RG site, but I clicked on the link that said 'if you're having problems with the scoreboard'.

edit: It actually says

Well from two tough first round matches to two (on paper) simpler matches.

I hope they both make it through to the final round and then compeition gets them into the MD but both face tough final rounds if they get there.

Shame for Naomi but clay is always going to be a bad surface for her but she had a decent shot at it this year, bodes well for the grass where she can shine.

Ons Jabeur is a 17 year old at her career best ranking, she beat Jie Zeng ranked 33 in Dubai but has also recently lost to players ranked as low as 306.
Laura Thorpe is 24 with a career high of 161 about a year ago. Her best win this year was against Cabeza Candela ranked 151 her worst loss against Torro-Flor ranked 415.

She's 24 with a career high of 161 last June and her progress has been interrupted by a few injuries over the years. She's Parisian, looks French/S European with perhaps a hint of N African ancestry (very hard to tell and I may be way off, but she certainly doesn't look English or American) and I can't find anything that explains why she has an English-sounding name - the French don't seem to find it at all odd anyway, so while it's slightly intriguing, it's clearly not important.

I could only find one interview with her (and even that is mainly an interview with Julie Coin), where she says he favourite surface is 'terre battue' (i.e. clay), and she prefers to play in hot weather.

Is it not likely that her father is of English descent ?

Thorpe's form has picked up recently and she did actually beat Laura's opponent today quite recently, but overall Laura must go in as a strong favourite if she can maintain her form from today.

I actually think Jabeur is a potential banana skin, Hev should win but I don't think its a done deal.

I think Hev will be OK against Jabeur. She is clearly a top player in the making but Heather can be very patient and I would back her to out-grind a youngster for sure.

Nice to see Laura do well, she looks a lot fitter lately and her movement has improved for sure. Shame for Naomi but time to get ready for some scalps on the grass (RG is always just a confidence boosting practise before Wimbledon anyway ;))
