RE: Week 19 - Great Britain F8 ($10,000) - Newcastle - clay

Dan Smethhust won.

The other match is in a 2nd set tie break, don't know who won the first....

i know this is a bit of a random question but is anna fitzpatrick andrews twin sister? i see they both have exactly the same birthdays. I am just curious

No, they're not siblings or related in any way.  Just one of those curious co-incidences!

lol what are the odds on that! same surname, both british, same birthdays

... plus same initial and both were the no. 5 seeds in the singles draw in Bournemouth a couple of weeks ago.

Very impressed at stevemcqueen getting the tournament office to call him back. Was it a case of 'call me back when you have a result or I'll pester you every 5 minutes for the rest of the day' ... or are they just big fans of The Great Escape? wink

So Dan beat Fitzy? Shame but at least there's a Brit into the Final being played later today.

I've been blessed (cursed?) with a posh accent, so getting through to "important"  people has never been a problem.

Lizzy on reception also sounded quite posh, not the slightest hint of a geordie accent ;)

Perhaps she had one in Sheffield ( Anna ) and then drove to Brum to have the other ( Fitzy ), or vice versa.

Still trying to work out exactly what Dan meant by that, but yes hopefully implies an all-Brit Final.

Ah - his QF opponent retired after one set - could he be implying that Fitzy did the same? (which would be sad news, obviously)

It seems Fitzy did indeed retire ...... tweet from him:-

Had to retire, hand is not up to scratch at all. I gave it a go.

cry

Didn't Mr mcqueen say that the second semi was into a second set tiebreak? I'm confused.

Yes he did, no doubt meaning "second SF to finish" not "second SF of the drawsheet" and Oli won that tiebreak having won the 1st set as well.

Steven, I think Dan is on about having 100 followers on Twitter. If you look down his tweets, he and Jack Carpenter were having the discussion on Tuesday. Might be wrong.

Nope!  Just an absolutely incredible coincidence (or they share a mother who's discovered the secret of being in two places at once!   ):  Anna Fitz is from Sheffield & Andrew from Birmingham. wink

Yes, a shame for Fitzy but another good week and now, hopefully, a chance for his hand to get better properly.

Dan has just told Phil the Final starts at 1 (and I think Phil is going to go along to watch it - he may confirm here himself or may be in a rush to leave!)

Both finalists have points to defend next week, but I make it that:

- if Dan wins, he'll definitely be back in the top 400 (at the moment, he might be but it's touch and go)
- if Oli wins, he'll be the first of the current crop of teenagers to crack the top 500
