Are you in Madrid ? Did you see Federer v Raonic?

Hi Julia.

Not only did I see Federer v Raonic, but also Nadal v Verdasco.  Two awesome games.

I have just got back and it is now 3.30am here, so if you want to know more, let me know and I will post tomorrow.

Bob

Thanks. I would love to hear  your view  on both those matches,   &  your opinion on Raonic.   I think there is a thread here somewhere for 'other' ie non Brit tennis.

As promised, match report here in the General section.

Bournemouth

- relatively weak
- the top 2 seeds were Brits
- Inzerillo had a 'mare (out to Alan Bevan in R1) in Fitzy's quarter
- de Greef out early to Short in Oli's quarter

Edinburgh

- stronger entry as the GEMs turned up in force
- the top 3 seeds were French (top seed Sakharon reached the Final)
- eventual winner Inzerillo went on a 4-match Brit-bashing streak
- Oli and Fitzy were suffering injuries after Bournemouth
- de Greef took out Oli early (though he did then lose to Luke who lost to Inzerillo in the semis), Fitzy went out in R1 and Dan went out to Marcus (who lost to Inzerillo in the QFs)

Newcastle

- stronger than Bournemouth again, but ...
- Oli and Fitzy both back on form (injuries still there but seemingly now manageable)
- 2 of the top 4 seeds were Brits
- of the other two, (1) Guez was taken out in R1 by Oli and in Fitzy's quarter, (2) Barry retired in R1
- Oli got revenge against de Greef as well
- Inzerillo out to a brilliant comeback by Kyle
- Dan had a kinder R1 draw and got a chance to get into his stride this time

In essence then, a mix of the relative strength of the entry lists (which weren't that different overall but saw significant changes in the top seeds from week to week), Oli and Fitzy's form/health, how well Inzerillo and de Greef were playing, some fine lines in the matches the Brits played against them and a bit of luck.

No doubt that answer is a lot longer than you were looking for (oops! ashamed) but it was an interesting question and it shows what little things can make the difference to whether the Brits come away with most of the points or not.

The SF's should be underway by now - due to start 9.30am and the sun is out so they'll presumably be on the clay!!!
Followed by the Final after 'suitable rest' .....

Is anyone there doing twitter updates?

Ah - his QF opponent retired after one set - could he be implying that Fitzy did the same? (which would be sad news, obviously)

Edit: Fitzy - "Had to retire, hand is not up to scratch at all. I gave it a go."

Oli: "@dansmethurst90 any connection with people retiring against you and the physio being your dad? #suspicious"

Perhaps she had one in Sheffield ( Anna ) and then drove to Brum to have the other ( Fitzy ), or vice versa.

we should probably be apologising to fitzy since he will probably read thes comments! sorry fitzy!!

I would hope he/she wouldn't be, but I apologise unreservedly if I have. No sleight intended to either. It is a very strange coincidence when all's said and done....even down to the first two letters of their respective Christian names! Spooky. She does have brothers but they aren't twins. Anyway, back on topic. I hope Fitzy can now give the injury some time to heal ,as a day here or there is obviously not enough. Congratulations on making another semi-final in what has been an incredible year for you so far. Hope it goes from strength to strength.

GSM Oli 6-4 6-1. Oli hugely impressive all week,Dan plenty to build on.

Thanks again to Phil for all the updates.

That will make Oli (on 21 May) the first of the current crop of GB teenagers to make the ATP singles top 500 - slightly older than Evo did it, slightly younger than the other two Dans ... and 6 months younger than Tim Henman!

Don't worry Steven, that was a cracking answer and sums it up perfectly!!

No, they're not siblings or related in any way.  Just one of those curious co-incidences!
