RE: Week 18 - ITF ($25K) - Chiasso, Switzerland - Clay

Hmmm. Well done Laura ! But a bit sneaky with the reporting. I have been trawling thoroughly for the past hour and then got distracted for 2 minutes !!

Hopefully they will put the No 1 seed on a court tomorrow that is covered by Bet365.

You really need to avoid the distractions !

A good win for Laura today, probably her best ever on Red Clay (although that's not saying much)

This is a Google translation of some editorial on the Club's website

"To take the field for the first ü was No 1 in the tournament, Laura Robson, who defeated the talented young Russian and Khromacheva clear in two sets, unleashing shots at times exceptional."  smile

She is playing 1st up on the 2nd court tomorrow, against Malek.  So once again no live score I presume

Shame that Laura has to play Malek, as she looks to have carried her impressive Fed Cup form over into this tournament. For me Malek is the only class act leftover in the draw apart from Laura. A former top 100 player with very solid recent form, beat her useful opponent today for the loss of only one game. If Laura wins that one I think it would be fair to get excited at what Laura can do for the rest of the season assuming she can stay injury free.

On the upside if Laura does lose tomorrow she will be able to play qualies at her next tournament which start on Saturday where she will be one of the top seeds.

Pity Laura couldn't go a bit further, but not too bad.

Just reading the earlier stuff and I agree with these for reasons given that it makes absolute sense for Laura to be playing this 25K on clay and try to get some matches under her belt on clay, as she has done.

I don't really see at all that it would have made more sense to have gone for a stronger tournament with a very possible exit after one match.

What she needed at this time was matches, especially on clay.

Just saw that via TF and in straight sets given the speed of the result.

Have to say Malek's result yesterday was a real eye opener and she was the favourite going in. Still a decent enough week and now she has time to get over to Cagnes-sur-Mer to play qualies which start tomorrow.

A pity but not a huge surprise given that Malek is ex-top 100 and seemingly good on clay.

However it does mean that the GB top 12 women have had a fairly dire week, unfortunately:

- 6 went out at least 2 rounds before they were seeded to
- 2 more went out a round too early (on the same basis)
- 2 more got drawn against top 4 seeds and went out in R1
- 1 didn't play

... with Heather the only the only bright spot

I think Laura will be relatively happy with her week, including a comprehensive win against a top junior only 12 months younger. Malek for me will probably go on and win the whole tournament.

Agree Heather is the main bright spot though.
