Hi Stir, actually I don't know how spanish people refer to racquet bag but, yes, raquetero is the argentinian version and portaraquetas the mexican one.
Spanish is a very particular language because so many countries speak it that even though the main divide is between Spain and Latin America there are also huge differences between the Latin American countries.
Don't get me started about tortillas! wink

I have to say that I loved Chela's rant, Steven.  Very perceptive!   I thought the bit about the 1,500 decibels was also spot on!   I just wish the bloody WTA would have the guts to do something about it! furious

Re the translation, I agree with bartman that it's not as rough as you make out.  I can't argue with your "soft toy" for peluche, but I think I'd've gone for "cuddly toy" to get closer to the tone of the, er, observation (IMHO, "soft toy" is a bit too stiff & correct! wink ).  Since the Spanish for "racket" (presumably even in Latin America!) is raqueta & in spite of the fact that all the on-line dictionairies which have an entry for it suggest that raquetero means "racket-maker" or "-seller", neither fits the context.  It wouldn't make sense, either, for any of the girls to affix such a potential distraction to the actual tool of her trade (can't recall ever actually seeing one on a racket, either), so I think it has to be "tennis bag". wink

Yes, raquetero is indeed tennis bag. You can also call it 'portaraquetas'. I've always thought 'peluche' is a plush toy but maybe that's more of an american word.

So is raquetero by any chance Chilean/Latin American Spanish & portaraquetas (a very logical translation to me) castellano, in much the same way as billete/boleto, coche/carro & gafas (in which I take an interest, as I wear them wink )/anteojos (or lentes), to name but three instances of differences in vocabulary, are (I won't go into the differing images the word tortilla conjures up for a Spaniard & for a Latin American....), or are the two interchangeable in mainland Spain?

"Plush toy" is most definitely Yank-speak, ergo to be avoided like the plague if you're a Brit! wink

So both finalists from last week, retire this week. A shame indeed....

Confirmed from Liam's perspective 32 minutes or so ago:

Lost 6-7 6-7 today. Didn't play my best but fought my hardest. Back to training in prep for Newcastle as pulled out injured.

Have to say, though, chaplin.gif to young Luke.  smile

Went to Edinburgh today, Coldest day watching tennis I have ever experienced. Well done to all the players for putting on a good performance in difficult circumstances. I take it all back. Indoors has a lot to recomend it!

Marcus did brilliantly to put out Viola. The balls were bouncing very low in the cold and his power was too much for the Italian. His attitude was much more in keeping with his "Will Bomb" tag than last year.

Shame about Ollie. I took my eye off his match for a second at 2-3 and it was all over with him visibly limping.

Milts was well beaten by Pauffly. Power over finesse on the day.

Matthew Short. Not Short on stature but definately short on temper. Looked like cruising to a victory over the brightly attired Ireland but nearly blew it after losing the second set with strops with the umpire. Balls did stray onto the back of the court but as footballers say "play the whistle" and don't stop playing til the umpire says so!

Slaba almost made a great fight back against his Italian opponent. He is a former champion here after all. Lost a close third set and lauched a ball at the castle ramparts! (a couple of miles away!)I can't blame him after the terrible few years he has had with injury.

Not a good day for the Broadies. After doing his best to stop Naomi crashing to a first round loss, Liam hung in there for the whole match with Luke Bambridge. In truth he was always struggling to match the power and determination of Luke. Liam has a very contained tidy game, but must develope more strings to his bow at senior level. Luke has got the bit between his teeth and looks good for the rest of the week. De Greef will be a test tomorrow. As will Inzerillo for Marcus, Venturino for Short, and Sakharov for Pauffley. Good luck to them all and here's hoping for a warmer day!
