I've just noticed Yakimova is here (WR 88 on the acceptance list). What on earth is she doing playing a 10K.

Yakimova played a 10k in Spain last week too (losing in the final...). Looking at her recent activity, the belerussian has not won a main tour match this year and apart from last week has only got a 25k qf to her name. I'm guessing a supreme lack of confidence has driven her to playing at this level.
