Had a good feeling about that! I reckon Smethers is our top clay performer now aside from Murray (and maybe Ward).

The unranked qualifier gave Dan a lot more of a battle than the top seed did, but he pulled through and next plays the player he beat 2 & 5 in Vercelli last week:

L16: Dan Smethurst WR 406 beat (Q) Adelchi Virgili (ITA) UNR by 7-5 6-7(6) 7-5

QF: Dan Smethurst WR 406 v (5) Marek Michalicka (CZE) WR 301 (= CH)

Dan was 3-4 down in the 3rd (he didn't say whether he was a break down or about to serve) when play was suspended for rain - hopefully he'll manage to make a quick start tomorrow!

Michalicka won by 4-6 6-1 6-4 - & then proceeded to lost in straight sets to the seventh seed, Bastian Knittel!
