A ridiculously early start to this thread because some of those at Braehead over the weekend were asking which teams we might meet next year and where.
I tweeted the possibilities yesterday but this list now takes into account the late result from the HUN v LAT Group II R2 tie and something I realised I had missed seconds after tweeting - i.e. the fact that R2 losers POR and ROU are not yet definitely in Group I next year because, unlike us, they had byes in R1 so still need to win relegation ties to survive.
Teams we could meet in R1 or R2 next year ... blue if it would be a home tie, red if it would be an away tie, black if home/away would be decided by lot because we haven't played them since 1970:
These teams will be in Euro Africa Zone Group I next year if they lose their WGPO ties in September:
Switzerland Germany (home if ties against the old West Germany are relevant to home/away here - I think they are - otherwise by lot) Russia Belgium Israel Italy Netherlands South Africa Sweden
These teams will stay in Euro Africa Zone Group I with us next year under the following conditions:
Finland - if they win in Romania in September or lose in Romania but then win at home to Denmark in October Denmark - if they win away to the losers of Romania v Finland in October Portugal - if they win in the Slovak Republic in September Romania - if they win at home to Finland in September or lose to Finland but then win at home to Denmark in October Slovak Rep - if they win at home to Portugal in September Slovenia - like us, already definitely in Group I for 2013
These teams will be promoted from Euro Africa Zone Group II if they win in September:
The winners of Latvia v Ukraine The winners of Poland v Belarus
Dates
September 2012 ties are 14-16 Sep and the final relegation playoff tie (DEN v losers of FIN v ROU) is 19-21 Oct.
DC dates for 2013 are 1-3 Feb for Round 1 and 5-7 Apr for Round 2, with WGPO ties due to be played on 13-15 Sep.
As you can see from the above, there is an even higher chance of having to play away next year, though there was a very high chance this year too, and we somehow avoided it ... twice!
In some ways it might be a pity that we got yet more home ties this year, because it means there are two more teams (SVK and BEL) that we are next due to play away - though if we hadn't had that home tie in February, we might have been staring relegation in the face right now.
However, it does mean that if, say, Andy wins a slam and then decides to play DC more often, GB could be faced with a long run of away ties as in 2003-5, when we had 6 away ties in a row and did not get a home tie in any of those 3 years.
Let's hope it will never be that bad again ... but remember that since that run of away ties, no less than 13 of our last 16 ties have been at home, including 9 of the last 10 and all of the last 6!
The one prediction I am prepared to make is that if we end up with a home tie against Switzerland at some point next year and both Andy and Fed seem likely to play, it probably won't be played at Braehead.

I see Belgium got a dream WGPO draw at home to Sweden and dropped just one set in a 5-0 win ...
Updated list of teams we could meet in Euro Africa Zone Group I next year ... blue if it would be a home tie, red if it would be an away tie, black if home/away would be decided by lot because we haven't played them since 1970 - the chance of away ties has got even higher with this weekend's results.
Finland - if they win at home to Denmark in October Denmark - if they win away to Finland in October Russia Netherlands Poland Romania Slovak Rep Slovenia South Africa Sweden Ukraine

I don't know whether it will be possible to do an "either/or" draw before the DEN v ROU or FIN playoff takes place next month, but even if the rankings are such that it would be possible, they may not do the draw until after that tie takes place.

The last relevant tie to finish today was ROU v FIN. Poor old Harri Heliovaara was 0-12 in DC before today and had lost his singles rubber on Friday from a set up and the doubles yesterday. Would it be lucky 13th DC rubber for him in the 5th rubber today? Er, no - he went a set up against Crivoi, then went 2 sets to 1 up and finally went a break up in the 5th set only to lose it 7-5. Ouch!

Seeded teams, possible R2 opponents should we win R1
17 Russia 18 Sweden 23 South Africa 24 Netherlands GB and their possible R1 opponents
28 Romania 31 Slovenia 32 Slovak Rep 33 Ukraine 35 Great Britain 36 Poland 38 Finland - if they win at home to Denmark in October 47 Denmark - if they win away to Finland in October
It is not clear from the DC rules (which only talks about the remaining byes being evenly placed in different sections of the draw) whether the 5th bye automatically goes to Romania as the highest-ranked unseeded team or whether it gets assigned at random.

Appears to be South Africa, Poland or Slovenia if we get past Russia, at which stage no more luck could avoid an away tie.
That isn't how it works. If we beat Russia we are into the World Group play off where we would play one of the 8 countries that lose in the first round of the World group stage.
If however we lose to Russia we would face one of South Africa, Poland or Slovenia in a relagation play off.
Indeed
I am normally up on such as draws and particularly re the Davis Cup I argued last year that it was actually a pretty clear and good format ( which it actually is )

Hopefully Andy will be willing to play as it isn't at a bad time of the year. Presumably he will play a warm up event somewhere in week one followed by the Aussie open. At least two weeks off after that then maybe Rotterdam, another week off and then probably Dubai. Obviously he then plays Indian Wells and Miami but although they are two big events back to back being played over "two weeks" they aren't too physically demanding in the way that other back to back Masters are. A winnable tie at home to follow that is not an entirely unattractive proposition and if he wanted a bit of a break after he could always give Monte Carlo a miss and start the clay court season a bit later.
Not sure how long Ross will be out of action (but I hope it won't be too long) but Leon Smith will have to rethink his potential DC team. Perhaps Colin and Jonny Marray could team up whilst Ross is out of action so we can put our best doubles guys into bat against Russia.
Colin and Jonny have only ever played two tournaments together. They won back to back futures in the Czech Republic in December 2008 without dropping a set.
