Week 11 Futures - Spain F6 ($10,000) - Badalona - Clay

Not just a 128-Q draw this week but one without a single bye!

QR1: Ashley Mount UNR v (q2) Rafael Mazon-Hernandez (ESP) WR 819
QR1: Nihar Navapurkar UNR v Lofo Ramiaramanana (MAD) UNR
QR1: Kyle Edmund UNR v Xisco Munoz Mora (ESP) UNR
QR1: Craig Walker UNR v Sergio Martos Gorner (ESP) UNR
QR1: (q11) Jack Carpenter WR 1115 v Carlos Capel (ESP) UNR
QR1: (wc) Aswin Lizen UNR v (wc) Francesco Migliano (ITA) UNR

Aswin is making his debut on the ITF pro circuit, while Ashley is looking for his first win on the circuit or at least a set in which he wins more than 2 games (0-6 in Futures qualifying) but hasn't got the kindest draw to say the least.

When is Kyle getting his ranking? He got his point 2 weeks ago right?

After Indian Wells on 19 March.

He got his point last week and Futures points usually go on the rankings on the second Monday following the tournament week but there are no rankings on the middle Monday of Indian Wells, so he has to wait an extra week.

Thanks! Do you know why future points are held an extra week? I'm pretty sure tour and challenger points are reflected the following monday right?

They are. I don't know for certain why it is, but my guess is it's because they don't want to hold up the rankings run while waiting for Futures results from remote (or just inefficient) parts of the world or that they don't want to have to input all the Futures results (or whatever they do with them) on a Sunday night.

Yeah I hadn't really thought about futures not being as efficient in submitting their results as CHs since they are much smaller events. I suppose that is the reason. Thanks Steven.

Of course, it may be that it was only a problem before the Internet became universal - the extra week was probably needed when Futures results were sent over to the ATP by carrier pigeon

The same delay applies to women's events below 50K btw.

Looks like we got three of six into the second round, with Jack, Kyle and Ashwin all winning.

Some crazy scheduling going on though as it looks they will all have to play twice tomorrow - assuming they get through to the 3rd round.  Don't understand that at all.  Why not 2nd round on Sat, 3rd round on Sun and 4th round on Monday morning as they seem to do elsewhere.  The main draw is only 32, so what is the problem.

Yes, hope no real problem with Kyle.  I'm guessing the potential FQR umpire would have preferred a Kyle QR3 win wink  He would still have had to beat the q2 seed to get into the main draw.

Judging by tomorrow's Order of Play, it looks like Jack won both his matches today, but neither Kyle nor Aswin made it.

Results to follow

Aswin went out in the 2nd round by 3 & 1 to Lucas McCone

Jack won 4 & 1 against Vargas and then 2 & 1 against Schoerner. Now has to play Esparcia Omedas (q5) in the last round of qualies tomorrow.

Kyle won in the 2nd round against Chazal (q14) by 6-4 4-6 7-5 but then withdrew from the 3rd round. Let's hope it's nothing serious. May just be fatigue for a young guy who has just spent 4 weeks on the road. Don't want to push a young player too much at this stage of the season and two games in one day may have been considered too much. Hope that is all it was.

Bob

I don't think he will be too worried.  We are used to all kinds of "mañana, mañana" here in sunny Spain.

Kyle:

"Won my first match yesterday! Then was scheduled to play another match but picked up a stomach injury, so decided not to play. A lot of matches coming up so not worth the risk!"

He's right obviously - and particularly not worth the risk when he would have needed to win 3 more matches just to get a ranking point.
