Week 9 - ITF ($25K) - Wellington, New Zealand Hard

R1: FITZPATRICK, Anna (GBR) 494 v GEUER, Nicola (GER) 574

Anna beat Nicola two straight a few weeks ago so lets hope she can repeat that result.

Congratulations to Anna on being the last woman standing from GB's representatives and intended representatives down under.

Hopefully she can now earn some points

Geuer is up to WR 507 today now that her Q+QF points for Sydney have gone on the system. Her career high was 276 in 2010. I'd check H2Hs, etc, but for its latest annoying trick with its new site, the ITF seems to have lost all trace of past matches ... - hopefully that's a temporary glitch.

Has anyone else noticed or is it just me, that there seem to be far fewer challenger grade tournaments in Europe this year compared to previous.
Looking at the tournament calendar for the next few months, this situation is not going to change. I assume its the European recession, as its not a lack of European tennis players.

My perception is that there's always a deficit of 25k+ tournies in this period (hence why we always say 'but they have no points to defend til April-May' - because there aren't very many points available!). It really does baffle me that the ITF can't operate a system whereby they say that certain weeks are 'full' and tell federations to go for a different week. Likewise, the disparity between quantity of womens' and mens' tournies is disgraceful - this week 8 mens' to 3 womens', next week 9 mens' to 5 womens'. I think that's appalling!

Just checked, and as you say it is largely a European thing - only 4 25ks in Europe proper in March-April! Bath being the only non-clay. Even in May things don't really pick up apart from the Italian clay tour...someone needs to introduce an early series of European outdoor hards, I feel....

Meanwhile back down under, I just had a look at how the doubles panned out.

SF: (2) Anna FITZPATRICK (GBR) / Chanel SIMMONDS (RSA)  best  Ying-Ying DUAN (CHN) / Yue-Yue HU (CHN)   6 - 2   6 - 1

F :  (2) Anna FITZPATRICK (GBR) / Chanel SIMMONDS (RSA)  beat  (4) Sung-Hee HAN (KOR) / Yurina KOSHINO (JPN)   6 - 3   6 - 4

Great stuff

Appropriately, given that her partner was Chanel, that is the no. 5 doubles title of Anna's career at 25K level and her 6th at all levels (4 x 10K and 2 x 25K) since the start of 2011.

I fear she may be becoming a bit of a doubles specialist though she has also won 2 singles titles in that time.

Nice one Anna! I was so impressed with her touch at the net when I saw her in dubs at Nottingham. She's not yet recaptured the great form she had over winter 10-11, presumably due to the perpetual foot/ankle interruptions. Maybe this long run of injury-free play (even if no points come of it) will help to increase her confidence that she's over the injury.
