Anne went 0-40 down, saved two match points, but not the third.

GSM Hsieh 64 75

Another disappointing week for the girls.

She went down 5 - 7 when play resumed, about 15 mins later. Saved 2 match points in a row, but not the 3rd.

So Anne loses first round

4 - 6 5 - 7

Doubles to be completed later. Or not

Annie K can be so frustrating to follow sometimes. You just never know whats going to happen.

Are the Olympics affecting her and Bally? So much pressure they are piling on themselves.

Bally is nowhere near the olympic cut-off in the "Race" (based on what rankings would be if points are dropped off with nothing added on) and if she loses r1 in both IW and Miami she will be in some difficutly ranking wise with 3 mandatory 5 pointers effecting her score.

Anne is currently sitting just inside the top 56, but obviously everything is heavily dependant on how she, and others around her do in the next couple of months.

I wasn't surpised by this result, Hsieh is a good player, and I had a bad feeling Anne would slip up here. Disappointing to miss set points though. That would have turned the thing on its head.

Better news in the doubles for Anne, as she and Bovina win their doubles match 6-3 1-6 10-6.

What is the cut off and do we get wild cards as the host nation?

Hooray.  I thought perhaps they were tanking it in the 2nd

It in't just a straight top 56 cut off. Each country is allowed a maximum of 4 in the singles draw which means countries like Russia which have umpteen players in the top 56 won't be able to send all their players in top 56. So cut off will drop.

I did a very quick analysis of this weeks rankings. Elena would scrape in as 55th entry and Anne would be about 15 out at the moment. But the rankings on June 11th  will be used so still time for this to change but thought I'd give you an idea.

Which means Bally has a big job to repeat her second round at Roland Garros last year.

Yes, the limit of 4 certainly helps with the cut-off.

Actually, as Paul M says, looking forward based on a kind of "race" to cut off date, it is Anne who is in the much better position at the moment.

Based on their current ranking points, and taking off these due to drop off by June 11th ( including 250 for Bally on June 11th  cry ) and replacing these with there best others we have :

Elena :   1015  -  460  +  6  =  561

Anne :  809  -  125  +  37  =  721

Laura actually not too bad either. Pity she had such an interrupted off season affecting her start to this, because if her second half to last year was anything like repeated in the first half of this year she would be right in there :

Laura :  560  -  72  +  2  =  490

And Heather err needs a few points  :

Heather  :  554  -  281  +  25  =  298
