QR1: (q8) James Ward WR 156 v (Alt) Robert Kendrick (USA) WR 280 (CH 69 in 2009)

Since qualifying for Miami Masters 1000 last year, Kendrick has played just 10 matches (with a complete break in the last 6 months of last year) and lost 9 of them. In the two matches he has played so far this year, he has taken Michael Venus and Jack Sock to 3 sets.

The other seed in Wardy's section (because it's an ATP 500, there are only two qualifying rounds) is (q2) Tobias Kamke (GER) WR 89, whom James beat 4 & 2 in Vancouver 2 years ago.

I've been reminded on Twitter that Kendrick's 'complete break in the last 6 months of last year' was due to a drugs ban related to an ingredient in a pill he took to counteract jetlag http://www.itftennis.com/shared/medialibrary/pdf/original/IO_61397_original.PDF

James should be starting out in 10 minutes or so (previous match just finished).

Looks like it will be Kudla in FQR if he makes it. Kudla currently leading Kamke 6-1, 5-3*
