Not what was I expecting, Sofia thought she played well so Hev's result not overly surprising. Seemed to get right back into it in the second set, before inexplicably losing 5 points on the bounce on her own serve in the last game. Hev you have to say is struggling at the moment. Since Wimby last year apart from the Sharapova performance she has lost confidence, picked up niggly injuries and appointed a new coach without gaining ground. It now puts her in an awkward situation. Does she come down a grade to get some wins under her belt or does she keep plugging away at this level hoping things turn around.
As for Bally, by all accounts that was a shocking performance given how well she played at the FedCup. I noticed that Nino didn't travel out with her last week, not sure if he's there with her now. So whether there is another issue at work here, not sure.
Naomi also had a poor match in qualifying.
I wonder whether trying to qualify for the olympics by right is having a negative impact pressure wise.
Hev doing her best to salvage a bit of pride: she & her German partner, Jasmin Wöhr, currently lead Alberta Brianti & Pauline Permentier by 4-1* in their first-round doubles match.
Bally's performance was a disgrace today. Absolute shambles from start to finish.
Bit of a worry given she has only 1 tour win this year. Needs to step it up.
A 'disgrace' is probably over-stating it, but from what I've seen of her recently (outside Fed Cup where she was fantastic, obviously), she's been trying a bit too hard (maybe the pressure of Olympic qualification that was mentioned above) - her style of play has always given rise to both very, very good 'badass Bally' days and dire performances where she just can't find the lines, but one of the biggest changes since she has been working with Nino is that the number of those bad days has drastically reduced ... until recently.
Still, having managed to drastically reduce the frequency of bad days once, there should be no reason why she can't regroup and manage the same thing again.
Arvidsson, meanwhile, is a former champion here, implying she likes the conditions, so if she was having a good day and Hev a bit of an off-day, that result is not a hugely surprising one.

Good to see Heather playing in the doubles and getting the win. I would imagine that she's very likely going to be needed for the doubles in the Fed Cup vs Sweden.
Pity about her singles this week and more generally. It's not really happening for her at the moment.
Just noticed earlier that her nemesis from last Spring in two 3 setters, at least one of which I recall she was very uipset about when the win got away, Christina McHale, is up to WR 34 after reaching the QFs in Doha on top of months of generally consistently good performances.
Just 8 days between them and I got a feeling Heather maybe built up these matches last April and May too much in her mind.
Anyway, back last April and May, Christina was ranked in the 90s and Heather in the 120s. Today, Christina is ranked WR 34 and Heather WR 123, certainly higher and lower than I would have expected last Spring.
Heather too can I am sure be a top 50 player, but at the moment things aren't clicking as she and her supporters would like for some reason(s).
