This year the Winter Cup is extended to under 12s, who have been taking part in qualifying this weekend (the under 14s and under 16s begin next weekend). Unfortunately the team of Ewen Lumsden (brother of Maia), Cameron Kerr and Harry Butler lost their opening match to the Czech Republic so do not qualify for the finals. They did however win consolation matches against Portugal and Latvia
Last year the team of Chris Pearce, Jonny O'Mara and Billy Harris won the under 16 event. The under 14s and under 16s have both started well trying to emulate that feat, qualifying in Turkey. The under 14 squad of Jay Clarke, Sam Ferguson and Marcus Walters cruised past Slovenia and Spain with 3-0 wins. Today sees the match to decide seedings, and Jay has put the team 1-0 up after a near 3 hour battle
The under 16 team of Julian Cash, Josef Dodridge and Adam Glynn were unseeded, but upset hosts and third seeds Turkey 3-0 and followed that up with a 2-1 win against second seeds Belgium - Julian pulling off a fine 3 set win over Clement Geens, the 2010 Eddie Herr U14 finalist, who is currently in the ITF top 200
The girls have had their moments, and progressed to a number of winter/summer finals, but don't generally have the depth to cope with the absence of star players like Laura Robson and Eleanor Dean, who have rarely played in junior team tournaments. The boys have often impressed though by being able to achieve more than their rankings would suggest.
The under 14s ended up by beating Turkey 3-0 whilst the under 16s lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic so will be unseeded in the finals
The under 14 and under 16 finals start tomorrow. The draw is up for the under 16s and inevitably given the Fed Cup draw we are paired with Sweden, who are the 4th seeds. It's the same team as for the qualifying, so they will be up against it as Sweden have two players ranked around 200 in ITF Juniors - we only have Peter Ashley amongst the 1996s ranked higher than that, and he is in Chile
Chance of a repeat title for the under 16s disappeared as a strong Swedish team beat them 3-0. Julian Cash playing the top singles lost narrowly to the TE16 finalist from last year, Elias Ymer 6-7(11) 6-4 6-2. They play Romania for the minor places.
Fortune favoured the under 14s against Germany. Their second player retired when a set up against Jay Clarke, and after their number 1 (ranked 4 in Europe) comfortably beat Sam Ferguson, Jay and Sam took advantage of their fortune by winning the doubles. As a result they play Hungary in the semis
Consolation for the under 16s with a 2-1 win over Roumania - wins for Josef Dodridge and Julian Cash (over last year's top ranked TE14 Bogdan Borza. The under 14s have just started their semi
A comprehensive 6-4 6-0 win for Jay against the Swedish number 2. Sam plays the number 1, Mikael Ymer (brother to last year's TE16 runner-up Elias), who at 14 is the highest ranked player on either side
