Yes, those 128 draws are tough for our guys, but I was thinking it is rather tough for your average non ranked or low ranked American that so many players enter the USA futures and there are so many qualifying rounds to get through with probably one or twoi against ranked players.

From all accounts their college systenm is really good, but breaking through in seniors, certainly initially via home futures, must be difficult.

And OK, Americans have a reputation for being rather insular, but it generally is quite a travel for them to any other future.

Ed has now played 14 days straight and 20 out of the last 21. Would have made main draw as a DA but looks like someone got an SE so he just missed out.

Included a 9-game winning streak in the middle of the match.

Btw that makes Ed 17-3 in the 20 matches (27 including doubles) he has played in the last 25 days (remember that very few players play more than 100 matches in these events in a whole year!), with just 2 singles ranking points to show for it so far. How tough is that?!

Ed's draw may not be as bad as it looks - Ouellette's 2012 so far has consisted of a straight sets loss in R1 at USA F1 to a player ranked outside the top 800 and the loss by retirement at USA F2. A week off may have given him time to recover from whatever has been ailing him though - for his sake, I hope it has, but if so Ed may have a much harder time than those other two opponents.

You were right, Steven:

R1: Edward Corrie WR 711 beat (2) Greg Ouellette (USA) WR 376 6-4 1-6 6-1 biggrin

R2: Edward Corrie WR 711 v (WC) Sekou Bangoura (USA) WR 876

Great win, but he's in a horrible section of the draw, Bangoura is 20 and probably well underranked (I'm pretty sure I remember him knocking out a seed in R1 of one of those US Challengers when he was unranked). He beat Ed 3 & 1 in Futures qualifying in October, but also lost 3 & 4 to Boggo last Newport qualies. The other seed is (6) Gabriel Moraru, who was in the top 250 back in 2005.

Bangoura is also Ed's doubles partner, but the pair of them have dipped out of the doubles competition, no doubt as a result of their exertions in the singles, though they gave it a go:

What is Ed's game like? Has he got a chance to get up to say Challenger level? He seems to be beating decent American players, so that must be a good sign. I know I could search the net, but I was hoping for some sort of first hand knowledge you only get on this fantastic site.
