Weeks 3-4 - Australian Open (hard) - men

Muzz is on a separate thread in the AM section.

L128: (Q) James Ward WR 161 v Blaz Kavcic (SLO) WR 104 (CH 72 last June)

Kavcic is predominantly a clay courter, but his one main draw win in a slam outside RG came here last year when he qualified, beat Kevin Anderson in R1 and then took Youzhny to 5 sets.

One of the best draws James could have hoped for though

Well done Wardy on qualifying - apparently it nets him £13,472.17 - nice!!

I think *fingers crossed* he's going to thrive on the big stage here.

A perfect draw for Dino....Blaz lost in the first round in Chennai on hard a coupl e of weeks ago, his previous match off the clay  was the US open where he lost to Ljubicic in the first round.  He did make the final of the Uzbekistan challenger though so he is not a complete idiot on hard....

The LTA must be feeling embarrassment after not funding him...Ha!

Good luck mate!

Knowing the LTA, they are more likely to take the line, "Look how much better our players do when they are not feather-bedded"!

Re. para. 1 - he also beat Kevin Anderson in R1 in Melbourne last year then took Youzhny (admittedly more and more flaky these days) to 5 sets in R2.

Re. para. 2 - if you mean James, he is on Team AEGON (i.e. full funding) this year and he was last year as well.

James lost the first set 6-4. Was broken at 2-3 I think but broke back at 3-5 only to lose his serve at 4-5.

*1-2 in the second set.

*big sigh*
Was hoping for another round at least - especially having seen his 'giant-killing' exploits at Queens last year.

another fruitful day for British tennis. Take away Murray, and there is a argument that Irish mens tennis is better then ours at the slams over the last 5 years!
