Week 45 - ITF ($25K) - Opole, Poland - Carpet

Indiana , your comments started the ball rolling I feel. you said "I accept there is evidently real principle here" and "there might be a case for holding their noses against any stench"   Both Pilster and yourself seem to know something we dont. You then posted that "anyone who thinks they do know should say nothing more"      Very strangeno

a)  My original post was really just written from a tennis point of view re my concerns about the possible effect on the Broadys' development of the ongoing impasse with the LTA.

b)  I know nothing that isn't in the public domain and didn't even go into that.

c)  Specifically, I personally know nothing regards your question.

d)  KK gives the reasons for my original answer to that.

Edit :  I see Steven has got in, while I was thinking about and composing this ( I shortened my usual wordy response to short points smile )   I am sorry that my original post has maybe led on to a few problems.

Not really - we have tough libel laws in this country!

Yes, we do, and while I think it's fine for people to discuss stuff that has been reported in the media or that they have found out themselves (as long as it's not libellous), I don't think we should be allowing people to potentially put the forum in jeopardy by posting unsubstantiated rumours about specific people - especially if the none of the media sees fit to publish them, either because they are afraid doing so might get them into trouble or because the rumours are simply untrue.

In saying that, I'm not trying to judge whether the rumour Pilster mentioned is true or not (and it would hardly be surprising if there is more to the bust-up than meets the eye) but I get fed lots of unsolicited rumours on Twitter by people who are in the know (or think they are, or from people who know someone else who is in the know or thinks they are!) and most of them seem to be unsubstantiated gossip, so I would be very nervous about posting any of them as if they were fact if I didn't have any proof.

To be honest, I'm not very interested in the non-tennis-related gossip anyway - who cares who's supposedly 'doing' whom? *yawn*

In any case, I think it's more than possible to strongly criticise the LTA's handling of the Naomi press situation without having to contrast it with whatever other people at the LTA might or might not have been doing.

Hence, I'm going to do some mild edits on the posts above to take out the most personal references. This certainly doesn't mean I'm trying to take one side or the other - I just hope whatever ends up happening is whatever is best for Naomi and Liam long-term, but I'm in no position to judge what that might be!

I am very impressed though at the way the Broadys have continued to progress despite getting caught in the middle of all this and that none of what's happened seems to have affected their ability to get on well with the other players.

Any more speculation that gets onto dangerous ground also risks being removed without explanation or warning. Apologies if anyone thinks this is a bit heavy-handed - I'm very much for free speech and I don't like having to make judgements about what can safely be left in and what can't, but I'm pretty sure letting through unsubstantiated rumours presented as if they are fact (even without any gory details) is just a little bit too dangerous.

Steven ,   no matter which way you look at this,Mr Draper as Pilster originally stated is surely still influencing the media by the very nature of you being pressured to "mildly" edit what was actually turning out to be a very interesting discussion. I think you would agree that your edits change the whole balance of the post. I dont think that anybody had been libelous here, Indiana and Pilster merely discussing Broady's situation from an unbiased perspective.

What was said may not be libelous.  Indeed, if it is true, it won't be.  However, that does not stop an action being brought against the person who said it, or the forum on which it was said, and such an action would be very expensive to defend.

Arguably, one of the failures of the justice system in this country.
