The 2nd round doesn't look quite so nice, where she'll probably face the top seed.

Eleanor has a new doubles partner this week, playing with Quirine Lemoine NED. They are 3rd seeds and have a 1st round bye.

True, however, I've just had a look at the top seed's results on hard over the last 6 months and they leave a lot to be desired. I'd stick my neck out and say Eleanor will win that one (presuming she gets past Roma first).smile

^That's good news imo.

I want her to fly (or drive in Eleanor's case) under the radar then BAMMM. Serena Williams 2.0.biggrin

Exactly. If her coaches think she can gain more from winning matches at the lower end of the senior tour then that's fine by me.

Eleanor gained a lot of hype from her Wimbledon 3rd round run last year, so a few years out of the lime light could allow her to improve without scrutiny.

The only problem with that tactic is it limits the number of tournaments a year you can play. If you don't also keep a high enough junior ranking, the junior tournaments you can top those senior tournaments up with won't be competitive enough. Avoiding UK tournaments & grand slams is enough if a junior really wants to stay out of the limelight - the media hardly notices any other junior G1/GA events. The orange bowl gets the odd mention if a Brit wins it, but that's it.

True... I guess finding the balance will be key.

The juniors who have been hyped up in the non-sports pages of the national press from a very young age - Jade Curtis and the Ren sisters come to mind - have not been the ones who have ended up being the most successful.  I suppose this was initiated by their parents, and you can't blame them if it is done to bring in sponsorship.

Match has started:

Eleanor 1-2*

Scoreboard has corrected itself to the much better: Eleanor 1*-2

3*-4 Eleanor is winning far fewer points at the moment.

Another plucky effort by Eleanor this week, but she bows out of the quarters by 3 & 2. cry

A pity the scoreline was worse than last week, but nevertheless, 2 QFs in a row unseeded is pretty respectable and she will rise around 100 places into the top 750 over the next two Mondays.
