Great to see everyone still gets excited about averageness on here.

Not true! What we get excited about is winning - whatever the level!

and that is about appreciating effort.

A bit of luck (hopefully) for the Bogster - Kudla has taken out Devvarman 6-3 3-6 2-1 ret.

QF: (LL) Alex Bogdanovic WR 303 v (WC) Denis Kudla (USA) WR 310 (CH 276 last month)

Kudla was world junior no. 3 last year (losing the USO boys Final to our old friend Jack Sock), beat Karlovic and Dimitrov to reach the QFS in Newport this year, won Laguna Niguel Fut last month and is 5-0 v Brits in seniors (Eaton, Short, Broady, Milton, Fleming)

Big match for Alex this, obviously a good chance to make a sf and cover his points from last year, but also I assume this would give him a se into knoxville?

Yeah it is a good chance. Kudla is no pushover, however I can't help but notice that he seems to lose his 3rd match of tounaments quite often, albeit it most of them in qualies. He also seems to beat higher ranked opponents in the 2nd round only to lose to a lower ranked opponent in the 3rd round. Let's hope this trend continues.

I've missed you Vandenburg!

Yes, assuming the Knoxville qualifying draw is tonight it would, but it's likely to be a case of all or nothing because he is playing the late evening match (2nd after 22.30 GMT), so it'll be a case of win and get an SE into the Knoxville main draw too or lose and not be able to play Knoxville at all.

@ Scratchy

Yeah Boggo has always had a bad win % in QF's for some reason, Steven did make some stats on it a while back. conversely his win % in SF's and F's is pretty good.

@ steven

didn't this happen earlier in the year too and alex lost in a late QF match and couldn't get to the next event. that will be a pain as obviously he won't have covered his points and will then only have one event.

Def Kudla wont be a pushover, Alex needs to find whatever he had in that 3rd set vs Delic again.

Edit: according to the knoxville site the Qualies dont start till Sunday so maybe there would still be a chance to make it in time.

That's probably a good thing then - means it's not 'all or nothing' tonight. Knoxville is about 400 miles from Charlottesville, so if Alex loses tonight, he should be able to reach Knoxville in time for qualifying sign in, I would have thought.

The downside is that if he does win tonight, the same issue is likely to occur tomorrow, but at least in that case he'll have the extra points for a QF win here if he can't get to Tennessee in time.

It seems pretty thoughtless to put the player who is in this situation on last (which probably precludes an early SF tomorrow if he wins), but there you go!

And Norwegian averageness is a cut above British averageness at Challenger level, is it, Vandenburg?

And as things stand at the moment, they are, bless their little cotton socks:  they lead by 7-6(4) 3-0*!
