Yes, I'm looking forward to Laura being free from AER and not spending half the year injured. I expect her to close the gap on Heather (who will have more points to defend) significantly.
Against good opponents, she really needs to be getting a lot of cheap points from unreturned serves
Laura v top 100 opponents this year 4-4, Anne 4-10, Bally 9-16, Heather 10-17 (I had to guess for one event so might be slightly out, I used WTA website)

I agree Laura's serve is not currently firing at the max, but her returns have really improved since the US open. This I believe is the main reason for her improved form.
Will be interesting to see how the Czink match plays out, both players hit the ball hard and flat, but Laura has the better serve and Czink the better movement.

I like the stats you have put together in this post as it shows that Laura's recent success has not been down to her serve, but instead it has been due to her general play.
I think that Laura has been playing as well as any of the British girls of late, the only difference being that the other girls (particularly Bally) have maintianed their level over a longer period of time.

Yes, looking longer term, it is in many ways very encouraging that Laura has been winning the matches she has and been competitive in others without a really consistent first serve. As Tony says it indicates good general play.
If she can get it more consistent it can become a real weapon for her, apart from one would think just giving her generally more confidence. Even as it is, it probably wins more cheap points than many women and is such that it can potentially win many more, as against some pretty high ranked players who don't actually get that many cheap points on serve.
