It's Cox's birthday today, maybe he wanted to go celebrate it instead of playing tennis?
That (or having celebrated a bit too much pre-match ) does seem like a plausible explanation, since if he was injured or ill, you wouldn't expect him to stay out on court for 12 games if he was losing them all. Doesn't strike me as something he'd do having gone all that way on a quest for ranking points though, so still a very odd scoreline.

What a shocking couple of weeks - two of the top four seeds each week, a R1 loss and a R2 loss for each both times.
I wonder if there are lots of under-ranked college players in the draws? (we know that was true of Neal Skupski's opponent when he qualified last week) - that would probably be the least worrying explanation, but still not good at all.

No shock that Eaton lost. I remember J-P Smith impressed everyone by reaching the finals of the NCAA Champs against Somdev when he was a freshman, so at least he must have substantial pedigree on hard courts. He'll not stay at Futures level for too long, in all probability.
I am interested in knowing what happened in Coxy's match!
I think you've got it in one, Steven. Can't swear to it, as I don't really follow them, but remembered seeing the name somewhere and think John Patrick Smith may be a former player at Tennessee. If so he ended last year ranked no 1 in doubles and no 10 in singles, and graduated in the summer. (A trawl through zootennis is a lovesome thing)
Edit: Pipped to the post by someone with more knowledge and a longer memory!
