She has to beat the qualifier Rodionova.

Yes, Ana will be playing Anastasia tomorrow, so I imagine Laura will play her R2 match on Tuesday.

Winning today has bagged her 70 points, 40 more than she was defending from last year, which should lift her into the mid-130s.

You can only beat what is put in front of you - and she did that fairly decisively.

Good stuff.

Well done Robbo, good win over Dulgheru, even if she didn't play well.
Surely that mustr be one of Robbos' top scalps at 53?

I was looking before this tourney started to try and figure out what level it was at. I can see what it is now on the WTA website, but is there a list you can consult prior to the tourney starting?

The WTA calendar at http://www.wtatennis.com/page/Calendar/0,,12781,00.html shows whether each tournament is a Premier event or 'just' an International, but doesn't distinguish between Premier Mandatories, Premier 5s and other Premier events, but there is a list on Wikipedia which splits them up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_WTA_Premier_tournaments

Good stuf from Laura. Good luck in the next round.

Would be nice for Laura to get a few wins at this level to end the year. Maybe even snag an Aus Open MD slot

Hopman Cup teams not all anounced yet, so still a possibillity, but I would be surprised if they got invited back 3 years on the trot.

So Hopman cup doesn't encourage that?

Really pleased to wake up today and see that Laura got such a good result, even if she was helped by lots of double faults from her opponent. If she is playing Ivanovic in round 2 and it's televised I think that's one worth getting up in the middle of the night for. Laura's big victories are starting to arrive more frequently right now.

Laura had quite a productive few weeks in Asia last year, where she gained 66 points in 3 events, but she has now defended all of those in little more than an hour of tennis and she has no more points coming off till March.

In terms of ranking points, the five Premier 5 tournaments earn only a little less than the four Premier Mandatory tournaments and markedly more than these termed simply Premier.

Grand Slam   :   L16  280 pts, rising to  2000  for the winner.

Premier Mandatory  :   L16  140 pts, rising to  1000  for the winner.

Premier 5  :  L16  125 pts, rising to  900  for the winner.

Premier :   L16  60 points, rising to  470  for the winner.

International :  L16  30 points, rising to  280  for the winner.

Laura has earned 70 points for reaching the L32 ( the same as Heather earned for getting to the QFs of last week's WTA International in Quebec ).  900 would be quite useful  smile

I think Andy is a big enough draw that they'll be 'invited' if he's interested. Laura's local connections don't hurt either (the local Aussie rules football side has their main stand named after her Great-Grandfather). Mind you, even if Andy is invited back, it doesn't necessarily mean he'll partner Laura.
