Oh dear.  It was a worry that Mel had so many points to defend downunder, but I hoped she'd find form and at least match last year.

With the points she's losing thsi week and next that cyrrently looks as if it will put her down to the 290s in the rankings a week on Monday.

It must be so frustrating for her.

I wonder if Mel's injury is still causing problems.

Oh, I'd forgotten about that.  Be really annoying if it is.

R1: MURRAY, Samantha (GBR) 471 lost to ZANIEWSKA. Sandra (POL) 369 (=CH) 6-7(3) 6-2 6-3

A pity, but while Zaniewska lost to Mel in R2 in Alice Springs, she then reached the Final in Cairns last week, so she'll be ranked in the top 330 next Monday.

R1: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 5 282 beat SANDERS, Storm (AUS) Q 766 (=CH) 6-4 7-6(8)

Sanders reached the QFs in Alice Springs, beating a top 300 player on the way, hence her 274 place jump in the rankings on Monday (i.e. the WR 1040 for her in the first post in this thread was correct at the time the draw came out)

R2: WEBLEY-SMITH, Emily (GBR) 5 282 v BOBUSIC, Bojana AUS 429 (CH 375 a year ago)

This is a repeat match-up from R2 last week, buthopefully not a repeat result, since Bobusic upset Emily 1 & 5 in Cairns before losing to Zaniewska (see above!) in the QFs.

Bobusic is solid but nothing special, but then again Emily appears to still have alot of ring rust so is probably the underdog given last weeks result.
Sam had a toughish draw but a decent performance in defeat.

Aargh, I thought it would be tough to get revenge for last week's defeat, but wasn't expecting the scoreline to be even worse.

That's 1 win out of an 'expected' (based on the seedings/rankings) 5 in the main draw this week, 1 out of 5 last week, and 3 out of 4 in Alice Springs - I know it probably has a lot to do with Mel getting injured in Alice Springs and Emily being a bit rusty after injury, but the reason they travel this far is to pick up some points slightly more easily than in Europe and so far this year, it has been a bit of a disaster.

Plenty more chances to come down under if they stick at it though.

I'm not sure that's the only reason they travel. 2 months in Australia probably has its other incentives and could be preferred to some European locations
