If Mr Broady got off a plane an hour earlier and had been up all night on the flight and was adjusting to a different time zone, it's a tribute to his talent that it wasn't 0 and 0.

He sat and "watched" the second set of the Willis match that was on before his match and were it not for an inconsiderate line judge who kept yelling "out" I think he would have been sleeping like a baby. He obviously wasn't in anything like a proper state to play a competitive match and while his movement side to side was okay his footwork was sluggish and he missed pretty much every ball where he had to get down low to play the shot properly. He knew he didn't have much in the tank and was trying to finish points off as quickly as possible. Early on this led to numerous atrocious errors but for a time in the second set he produced winner after winner with his forehand (which as we all know is a potent weapon). Another factor was the quite horrendous wind which caused both players to struggle badly with their. All in all I don't think I will be particularly worried by this defeat.

On the subject of the wind, it really was horrendous and had a serious impact on the standard of the tennis. Pretty much every match was poor quality. Take Fitzy's match, a 3 + 3 win looks routine but there was probably 9 or 10 breaks of serve. Ditto Thornley's win, it looks routine on paper but the match was terrible.
Incidentally in the one match that I didn't post the result Glancy was *4-3 in the third when I left.

I overheard a very interesting conversation at Nottingham today. Two of the foreign contingent were talking, mainly about the playing conditions in various countries, but eventually they got on to the subject of how strong French tennis was. The one of them (who was French) asserted that there are scores of unranked players in France who are perfectly good enough to be ranked and that the only reason they are not is that the line ups at French futures events are so strong due to France's very deep talent pool. The player in question said this was one of the reasons why he mainly competed outside of France. When you think that France has 109 ranked players it is quite scary to hear someone say that they have scores more potentially good enough.
well with 90,000 competative players thats not suprising.
Hasn't got them a male GS winner for a good while though
Obviously the GEMs have a lot more strength in depth than us and are perfectly set up to do well in DC, but it is odd that they can't even match GB on slam semi-finalists since the year 2000 - since then it has been:
