Harder than I expected but a win's a win and Rusedski will face 2nd seed and nemesis Thomas Johansson in the quarters. That will be an extremely tough match
Greg must be gutted. Johansson broke him to 30 and served for the match at 6-5. I think he had a couple of match points but Greg saved them and broke him to take it into a tiebreak. Johansson had a minibreak at 3-2 but Greg stormed back and had two set points at 6-4 but missed them both and I think Johansson won the breaker 8-6.
Did not know where to put this so maybe not the best thread. However why is it the men have a full calendar after the French and the women only 1 tournament and that's basically over subscribed. Is it something todo with the fact that the WTA left indoor European tournaments and basically signed long term contracts with China? You think the WTA signed its finals to Shenzen for 10 years and that is a long time. I wonder what Billie Jean King has to say about this?

It has been mentioned in one or two places but not really debated. My take is that when the Chinese banned all sports events, the calendar did indeed fall apart, alongside some other Asian events around it that made little commercial sense playing. The European events left like Linz and Moscow, I'm not sure why they couldnt be played , and the ATP do seem to have worked harder at putting in replacement events like Cologne and Sofia and moving other dates around. Whether the wta were less competent in this respect or hamstrung in some way by contracts, I have no idea, but the fact they have such a limited calendar after this current event seems a massive dereliction.
There's basically nothing for the rest of the year for the women. It remains to be seen what happens in Australia in January. Of course the WTA was lured by all the money in China on a long term basis. But there never seemed to be many spectators watching. Politically it did not look very good what was going on in Hong Kong. I think WTA and China was a case of do not put all your eggs in 1 basket.

Let's face it it wasn't just the WTA that made that error
