And Alex Ward is playing club tennis, and training in Belgium

I think Steven missed Bartman's point which was to do with qualifying draw. I can only assume that others would have turned up had they thought they would get it.

Tweet from Fitzy

Won 76 63 wasn't pretty but they say they you have to play badly once on route to win the tournament. Next up feaver.

Feaver's win guarantees a British semi-finalist - but the winner should come from that part of the draw anyway!

LOL I didn't miss his point but I made it look like I did ashamed I should have made it clear that I was talking about the main draw because I thought it being relatively easy to get straight into the main draw explains why there were no ranked players in the qualifying draw.

As for actually getting into the qualifying draw, I don't think it's that unusual for there to be space in a Futures qualifying draw such that getting an IPIN and just turning up is enough - indeed, at least two brave non-pros who post on here (wolf & FD - FD was the other one, wasn't he?) have done exactly that at Futures being played close to them!

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, the absence of top pplayers in the main draw explains it in part I guess. It's just surprising to me to see a lot of these guys who I've seen play in grade 3 tourneys. I would assume that there would be a good chunk of players rated in 3.1-4.1 who would jump at the opportunity of playing the qualies of a futures.

The level of participation is a general problem in Briitsh tennis.

I was officiating last week at the Cheshire Juniors and was hearing how entries were down across the board. In the senior event they only had 8 entries.

No major surprises involving the Brits apart from Hewitt beating Willis.

First ranking points for Adam Thornton-Brown and Dominic Ross-Hurst, plus Keelan Oakley secures his ranking for another year. However Marshall Tutu is now in serious danger of losing his ranking, next week is probably his last chance to hold onto it.

Fitzy reports:

"Just won 76 61, keeping up my good form, and good breaker record! Goodall set up and break up against oakley. VERY windy!!"

He was playing James Feaver, seeded 8 and ranked 12 places above him, so technically that's an upset, but not a very surprising one on recent form - indeed, their positions were already due to reverse based on the points Fitzy gained last week. Even if it turns out he hasn't quite done enough to make it into the top 750 next Monday, this win should definitely take him there, though he then has 2 points coming off the Monday after.
