RE: Week 35 - US Open main draw (women)

Kuznetsova takes the set 6-4 but sounds like a very competitive match.

The Beeb are also covering the match on 5 Live Sports Extra.

Bally now 3-4* in the second set. Amanmuradova waits the winner in Round 3.

Bally loses 4-6 3-6

A good performance from Bally, the best I have seen from her since Wimbledon but Kuznetsova was on her game today and was just a bit too good.

Of all the GBgirls I think Heather's match v Sharapova was the most competitive which is quite surprising when you look at the difference in rankings. To win 89 points to Sharapova's 99 and to break her serve 5 times out of 5 is pretty impressive. If Sharapova finds it hard to break Heather's defence it suggests there must be few other players with a strong enough attack to break it down. The next year or two should be pretty special as we watch Heather and Laura climb the top 100.

Yeh I agree with Peter. And true, having any player climbing the ranking is brilliant but I think it will be incredible to see how their rivalry develops, and also where they might take British Fed Cup in the next few years. I would love to have Fed and Davis Cup both regularly televised each year.

Along with Stephens and McHale, I feel Robson and Watson are two of the most exciting future prospects out there.

Laura Deigman is having a busy day today. According to the schedule of play she plays Lauren Herring 3rd on court 14 in the girls singles and plays her again 3rd on court 15 in the boys singles. Both courts start at 10.00 local time. Is this taking equality a step too far confused.gif

They now seem to have modified the schedule, two boys are now playing in the 3rd on court 15 slot.

I wonder when we are finally going to get a home Fed Cup tie to go and watch, that would be fun! smile The last time we played at home in Fed Cup was 1993, when we hosted Group 1. The earliest it could possibly happen is April next year, if we got promoted and then got a home tie in the World Group II playoffs.

That is a ridiculous gap to have to wait....I love watching Davis Cup live, although have only managed to go a couple of times. Would certainly make some time to watch Fed Cup too if it was in the UK. Ive only seen Heather playing live in dubs, never Laura, so to see them both playing on the same day would be brill.

Anyoen have any idea when they might combine next for doubles? Do we think they will work together at the Olympics or not? I can imagine Laura playing with Broady rather than Heather, and maybe Heather teaming up with Joss?

Yes, previously it has been Robbo/Annie K and Heather/Joss. But don't count out Bally wanting to play doubles during the games, I imagine she'll throw everything at it.

Oh joy, bloody Virginia Wade is commentating on Williams v Azarenka. I can understand the useless BBC old boy network continuing to employ her, but I thought Sky was a sensible hard-nosed business.

Wade not employed by Sky, the interactive service shows the two main courts which are commentated by the hosts and they are mostly American apart from our very own Virginia.

Just found some great HD highlights of Heather's match. All the best points.

Who would have thought after watching Laura beat her at Wimbledon that Angelique Kerber would go on to be a US Open semi-finalist?

I guess it's time for another Ratty rant about doubles!

When, oh when, is this ridiculous women's doubles final ever going to end? Does anyone apart from the players really give a stuff who wins?

And in what other walk of life does the starting time of the main event depend upon the duration of a pointless sideshow which is inexplicably scheduled beforehand?

OK, back into my hole I go ....
