Lost the tie-break 7-2. 1st serve %age seems to be about equal, but Yani getting better results against Ward's 2nd serve than vice versa.

Oh dear, not a great start. Typical that he's now got as good a section as he could ever have hoped for but probably the most dangerous opponent in there up first.

Real pity James couldn't hold the lead and the tiebreak slipped away, but overall was certainly more pressure on his serve, particularly latterly, than on Yani's in the first set.

Wants to be making a solid start to the 2nd set.

Just looked at the stats - Ward took his single break point. Yani took 1 out of 8. Yikes.

Not looking good.    6 - 7   * 2 - 4  with one break in the 2nd set.

C'mon James

When Yani gets his 2nd serve in play, he is currently winning 18/24; which is ridiculous. Even with the 4dfs he is still winning 64%.

40-30 followed by a long delay, which usually means match over

I'm sure James is even more disappointed than we are.

Bah  cry

I did think James would get through, but it was never likely to be easy.  Yani is a pretty decent player in good recent form, and there must be a good chance that he will now qualify.

Big disappointment after a pretty good summer.

Yes, still up 77 places (216 to 139) in the last 3 months, so plenty to be positive about, but a pity he wasn't able to use that momentum to take him through to the USO main draw.
