Week 34 - US Open qualifying (men's)

(for reference next year - women's draw posted first as pdf around 23.20 BST)

QR1: (q16) James Ward WR 139 v Michael Yani (USA) WR 208 (CH 143 in 2010)

H2H 1-0, Wardy won 6-2 3-6 7-6(5) in the 2009 Sarasota semis on his way to the title.

The other seed in his section is (22) Matosevic. Bohli and Ram are the other two most recognisable names in his section.

So it was Wardy's one place rise in the rankings today that got him a top 16 seeding!

Not bad at face value that draw, if Wardy can keep his current form up no reason why he can't qualify.

Yani is in pretty good form having beaten Yen-Hsun YU (WR66) and Dudi Sela (WR82) in the last two months. Sounds 50/50 to me.

Evo was just two out from making the cut here in the end - WR 300 was the last player to get in.

Lleyton Hewitt has withdrawn and Matosevic has been given the AO-traded main draw WC in his place. That means James is the only seed in his section. Matosevic has been replaced by Carsten Ball, another Aussie (against whom James has a 2-0 H2H) ... so Evo missed out by just one place - not sure if he was there or not just in case.

Of course, if he is there, he may yet get in if someone withdraws from qualifying before starting their QR1 match, but now play has started, another main draw withdrawal won't create an extra place in qualifying, it'll just create a lucky loser place in the main draw.

Ah ( assuming he is there ), so close to Dan getting in, and being pitched into James' section as well.

Tweeted Liam to see if he knew of Evo's whereabouts and he came back with:

@philwrig I don't think he is in New York. He was in Uzbek before? But he came home a week early because he was ill

Think Wardy was 15-40 down there. good comeback to hold serve and keep the break. 5-3
