ghedin ploughed one into the net then hit a df to give alex 0 - 30.
Alex UE 15 - 30
Alex hits a winner 15 - 40
first mp gone 30 -40
Alex comes to the net for the first time, Ghedins lob goes long Alex breaks
Final score Ward wins 2 -6 6-2 6-2
Didn't catch much of the first set, but the second and third were very tidy from Alex who looked like he was in control and definately deserved to win the match
I suppose that means that Dan & Josh are now going to fall flat on their respective arses, given that they're both Brits & that there's that unwritten rule which states that we're destined never to see three, let alone four, out of four Brits triumph in an overseas Challenger event!
Loved the way he really took it to Ghedin in that last game - realised he had nothing to lose by going for broke on the Italian's serve and it really paid off, no need to serve for the match.
This win together with the 3 points for qualifying takes Alex close to his career high - my best guess is 467 c.f. his CH of 464. 3rd seed Alexander Kudryavtsev (RUS) WR 153 (CH 132 in March), who beat Dan Cox 2 & 4 in Pozoblanco last month, or qualifier Safwat next, while Jamie gets Miloslav Mecir (SVK) WR 321 (CH 293 in Jan), H2H 1-0, 6-6(3) 6-4 in Cardiff last October, or (Q) Michail Elgin (RUS) WR 376 (CH 123 in 2009)
