RE: Week 31 Futures - GB F12 ($15,000) - Cumberland (Hard)

I make that 8 rankings upsets in the first 10 matches! confuse

Btw talk about cutting it fine - today was Neal Skupski's last chance to keep himself on the singles ranking list, his Roehampton points come off on 15 August, but now his point from this event will get added the same day.

Finally, a result that goes with the players' respective rankings:

R1:  (WC/7) Chris Eaton WR 412 defeated David Rice WR 429 by 3 & 4 wink

An assortment of tweets from the players - I know Daisy posted the first one earlier, just repeated here for completeness:

Baker: "Good solid start at cumberland club this morning. Straights sets victory against a player playing very well. Great to play again tomorrow"

Golding: "Dissapointed to lose today ! Was a tough match .. Have played better but got to say too good to @nealskupski's second serving today"

Skupski: "Got the win today 46 64 76 over Oliver Golding. Playing doubles with him later against Rice\Thornley."

Broady: "Lost 7-6 6-4. So many chances but I can feel my game coming back"

Skupski (re Marsalek): "Don't think Marsalek has missed a ball in the past hour against Brezac."

Goodall: "Gd match today, won 62 75. Kept my run of not losing first round this year in futures. French qualifier tomoro. Allez"

Marsalek: "Played a very good match today... Saved 4 match points! Got a bit lucky in the final set with him pulling out but I'll take it!"

Sorry that my updates stopped but my phone decided that it didn't want to connect to the internet any more. Anyway a few comments, mostly on Broady as I watched most of his match.

Broady will feel that he should have won this match. Although he didn't play great he was much better than last week. He started and finished the match the better but a terrible spell in the middle of the match cost him. His demeanour was also better that last week. He was still frequently angry with himself but channelled his anger better and also showed positive emotion when things went well. He served for the first set at *5-4 but played a very poor game. He went two mini-breaks down in the tie break, fought his way back and doubled faulted at 5-5. He then lost his serve in the opening game of the second set in a marathon game where he saved at least 4 BPs, possibly 5, before succumbing. It looked like his mind was still partly on the first set. After that he pulled himself together and push Coco all the way. He 4 points to break back (never more that one at a time) and really should have taken at least one of them as he got into the point on 3 occasions. He is clearly pushing himself very hard at the moment, setting very high standards, and while this is a good thing it is a fine line between pushing yourself and driving yourself crazy. Last week he went way over that line, this week he was on the line or just over it. All in all there were quite a few positives for him to take from this match, he is clearly good enough to play at this level, and a few important lessons to learn from it as well.

Baker v Fitzy was a very tight match. Baker got the break last in the first set, there then followed a bizarre start to the second set where the first 5 games all went against the serve. Unfortunately for Fitzy when the madness stopped Baker had the lead an he never gave it up. Will be interesting to see if Fitzy comments on here. It is safe to say that he didn't think that the match was umpired to the highest standard.

Short was very good money for his win and actually led the first set 5-0*. Middlekoop was very poor for a player of his ranking, I have to assume that it was just an off day. Both players were incensed at some of the umpiring decisions. I don't think I have ever seen a player get a code violation for swearing because they were berating an umpire while they were 5-0 in a set.

Really don't know how Marsalek won. Beaten comfortably in the first set he was *0-2 in the second and came through a marathon game where he could easily have gone a second break down. Very, very gutsy performance. All credit too him.

Golding v Skupski looked to be a very good game. As others have said Skupski is a better player than his ranking suggests and he played the big points well.

Smethurst looked a bit rusty. Some very good shots but too many errors as well against a consistent opponent.

Didn't see any of Goodall v Milton but Mliton was 4-1 up in the second set before losing it 7-5

Really pleased for James Marsalek.  To me, he has been pretty impressive over the last few months without much luck,  If he got lucky today, you take it son, you've earned it  smile

tough day today singles wise.
started very very well and got an early break and was playing really well. He managed to get back into it and it was a very tight long first set where most games went to deuce.
Ill get it out the way, the umpire had an absolute shocker, and i dont mind if they say, i made a mistake there, but cant go back on myself or admit to being wrong or what ever.
But when an umpire sticks their hand out, to call a serve in on a big point, then changes his mind and tells me he never called it in, u cant respect them.
I have no problem if he had said i made a mistake and changed my mind, but lying to your face doesnt help anything.

So moving on i played good and am playing well, serving let me down slightly but just looking to move forward and get into the draws week in week out.
Nice words from bakers coach at the end saying i had progressed massively and i would be soon mopping up those matches. Always nice to hear your going in the right direction, but i feel im not getting the results i deserve.

won doubles 61 61 and was nice to get the singles out of my system with a nice doubles win. Playing with my friend so nice to do that and hopefully get another win tomorrow to get him a doubles world ranking!

Well done for recovering for the doubles, Fitzy, and good luck in the next round tomorrow.

Just a pity the LTA and/or the ITF, the so-called/self-styled "world-governing body of  tennis", can't be @rsed to post the results of all the first-round matches that must have ended, literally, hours ago, even on Twitter....! furious  Honestly, in this technological day & age...! disbelief

Two hours ago Broady tweeted that Morgan's singles match was still going on. That being the case their doubles match could still be on court.

Golding just tweeted to say he lost 11-9 in match tie break of his doubles

LTA Twitter is "over-capacity"!    Surprise, sur-bloody-prise!    Just what is so difficult about about making up-to-the-minute results available on the web site relatively quickly? confuse

Only trouble is, I had the singles matches in particular in mind, RJA.  The doubles matches were not scheduled to kick off before 16.00 & it's now getting on for 21.00, so I'm not prepared to cut the LTA any slack whatosever on that score.

In addition, LTA Twitter appears to be obsessed with the juniors' (U16s') results at the moment.  While I've no quarrel at all with that in principle - the juniors are this country's future in international tennis competitions, after all - it is quite unacceptable that their progress should have been followed since the late afternoon to the exclusion of that of their seniors!
