Carlsbad is on the Californian coast between LA and San Diego.
L56: Elena Baltacha WR 57 v Melanie Oudin (USA) WR 100 (CH 31 in April 2010) - winner to play (3) Radwanska
The great new hope of US womens tennis two years ago when she reached the QFs of the US Open, beating Dementieva, Shazza and Petrova on the way, Oudin hasn't won back to back matches in a WTA (with the exception of a R2 win by w/o in Fes)since last September, i.e. almost as long as Bally. Unlike Elena, however, she hasn't won back to back matches in any WTA-ranked tournament since last November, when she reached the Final of a 75K, and she has lost her last 7 WTA/slam main draw matches.
Oudin has only played Brits at senior level three times - a win and a loss against Georgie Stoop in 2008 and a 3-set win against Mel South in 2009.

Good draw. 19th successive time Bally has gone in unseeded and hasn't drawn a seed .
I haven't checked this, but assuming you're right, the chances of avoiding a seed 19 times in a row like that are about 1 in 2000! (though obviously that needs adjustment for events like this where the top 8 seeds have byes)

I have a sheet keeping Bally's overall position since I started noticing this.
The last seed she met in R1 ( or q1 ) was Li Na (7) at Eastbourne in June 2010 with a very pleasant result.
This is her 29th tounament since then.
Seeded in 10, a mixture of WTA qualifying, 100K and two recent WTA main draws.
Not seeded in 19, these being five Grand Slams, twelve WTA main draws, one WTA qualifying draw and one 100K. Has not met a seed in R1 ( or q1 ) in any of these. Though the seed in her section has been waiting for her in R2 ( q2 ) on 14 of the 15 times she has so far got through R1 ( q1 ).

Apart from a small blip at 6-0 4-0 when Bally conceded 4 points on the bounce that looks like a textbook performance. You have to feel for Oudin though who is going through a crisis period in her career.
