Boys & Girls: 2011 Tennis Europe Nations Challenge by HEAD (under 12)

The under 12 European summer cup was added in 2007, with the boys team of Jonny O'Mara, Luke Bambridge and Chris Pearce finishing fourth. That remains the best finish, with boys teams qualifying for the finals in 2009/10 and one girls team qualifying in 2009 (Freya Christie, Lana Rush and Maia Lumsden - who have just qualified for the World Junior Tennis U14 finals).

The format is that nations are divided into 4 qualifying competitions, each of which contains 2 groups. Group winners play the second team in the other group to determine which 2 nations progress to the finals.

Qualifying reaches its critical stage today with the play-offs. The girls team looks strong led by Anastasia Mikheeva (who followed Maia Lumsden as winner of the prestigious Auray event earlier this year) along with Georgie Axon and Katie Swan. They only conceded one dead doubles rubber in beating Poland, Netherlands and Bulgaria and now play Denmark to qualify. In their case winning the group was of major concern, since the second placed team have to play Russia, who are perennial fly strong in the girls team tournaments.

The boys team of Barnaby Smith, Dominic West and Max Stewart were well beaten by France (who are usually as strong in the boys as Russia  are in the girls) but won their other 2 matches against Serbia and Belarus 3-0 to secure second place and a play-off against the host nation Netherlands

Great news as for only the second time both teams qualify for the finals in a fortnight's time. None of the girls conceded more than 6 games in any of their matches, and they should be one of the strongest teams in the finals. The boys had a much tougher passage, but got there in the end.

Girls Play-off

GBR 3 Denmark 0

Katie won 6-2 6-0
Anastasia won 6-1 6-3
Georgia/Katie won 6-2 7-6(3)

Boys Play-off

GBR 2 Netherlands 1

Dominic lost 5-7 1-6
Barnaby won 6-7(5) 6-2 6-1
Max/Barnaby won 6-4 6-0

Good news

From what little I've seen of her (and her results), Mikheeva seems like a real talent - borderline scary (at least if you're the same age as her!) but in a good way - think Bally.

All I have seen of her is brief internet clips, but she has a similar background to Bally - Eastern European father with sporting pedigree who moves to Scotland. See this 2010 article for more background.

Thanks for that read.

Interesting to note she is two handed on both sides.

With the under 16 team events concluding it's the turn of the under 12s to be in the limelight. They play in 2 round robin groups of 4 with the winners of the 2 groups playing off for the title

The girls are drawn with Ukraine, Spain and the Czech Republic, and open against Spain tomorrow afternoon
The Boys are drawn with Italy, Romania and Ukraine, and take on Italy tomorrow afternoon

Surprisingly it's the boys who retain hopes of winning the trophy

GBR 2 Romania 1

Dominic won 6-2 6-1
Barnaby lost 0-6 4-6
Max/Dominic won 3-6 7-5 6-1

They play Ukraine in their final Group match. By my reading of the rules we will win the Group and be in the final regardless of the results today.

By contrast the girls will finish bottom of their group after losing to Ukraine regardless of whether they beat the so far underfeated Czech Republic

GBR 1 Ukraine 2

Katie lost 2-6 6-3 4-6
Anastasia won 6-4 6-4
Anastasia/Katie lost 2-6 6-7(4)

The Boys completed the group stage with a third 2-1 success against Ukraine, while the girls lost to group winners Czech Republic (Anastasia losing to the girl she beat in the Auray final). Thus the boys reach the final for the first time and play Russia, who edged out France (who beat GBR comprehensively in qualifying) in the other group

Boys Final

GBR 1 Russia 2

Dominic lost 3-6 2-6
Barnaby lost 2-6 4-6
Max/Dominic won 6-4 6-4

A very good result finishing second, though it should be remarked that all the teams in GBR's group lost to the team finishing in the same place in the other group, so there was clearly some imbalance in the allocation.

The girls finished 7th after cruising past Portugal without dropping a set (similarly in the girls case their group looked stronger than the other with the exception of the top team Rumania, who won the title, and possibly Russia)
