It remains a fact that LTA funding (which gives access to play more and a wider range of tournaments) and home tournament wildcards provide a massive ranking boost (relative to actual playing level) for British players compared to those from countries where there is no federation funding and limited wildcard opportunities.

Naomi is not a good example to quote, by the way, because she isn't funded by the LTA ... but good luck to Sirotkina generally - her site is nicely set up and her blog is quite fun.
Yes, the LTA AEGON funding was refused by the Broady family. As The Times reported at the time, due to issues between the LTA and Naomi in the past :
"The LTA suffered acute embarrassment yesterday when two of the 32 players chosen to receive significant funding help next year immediately said that they did not want it.
The Broady family, from Stockport, will not accept a penny from the governing body as long as the present regime remains in control. "
...it is clear Naomi does have some sponsors, but still to quote her website : "She currently has very little financial backing so we particularly need tennis sponsors to help with her training and travel schedule."
Naomi does receive some WCs and yes, these can be beneficial, but the funding is clearly more of an issue.
Anyway, I'd just like to say welcome to the site, ITFTennis, and I'd just reemphasise that folk on this site have certainly recognised Marta Sirotkina's talents and it is good to learn some more about her,
Sorry, but (maybe rain-delay the macth has gone on bet365) It is the first time I use bet365. Thank you again!
You're welcome. I think it is unlikely that there was a further rain delay: the next scheduled match is now well under way (Mel & Lenka lead by 6-2 2-0* ). When you've become more accustomed to its funny little ways, you'll realise that matches disappear very quickly once they have been completed. The board for Mel South's match this morning, on the other hand, showed "rain delay" for some considerable time &, I believe, remained visible until play resumed.
SF: (1) Mel South & Lenka Wienerova (SVK) WR 365 defeated (3) Bojana Bobusic & Alenka Hubacek (AUS/AUS) WR 661 by 2 & 1 (should've been 2 & 0, but one or other of them dropped her service to 30 in the sixth game! )
QF: Lucy Brown WR 803 lost to (3) Marta Sirotkina (RUS) WR 263 by 5 & 1
And there endeth the British singles challenge Though that looks a pretty competitive effort by Lucy in the first set, and she does look to be progressing quite nicely.
anna played well at times but we won't see the best of her until her foot injury fully heals.
Is she moving badly then? She seems to come back a lot and then get injured again...bit worrying :s
not moving badly, but experiencing some pain, same injury from early this year picked up in portugal, hasn't healed fully and will most likely need a small operation to put it 100% right. not the same foot as before.
report friday : didn't see much of mel's first set, but then she broke at the start of the second, and a comeback looked a possibility if not a probability, it then rained and it was moved and completed indoors. she then consolidated the break, but then the better player regained the superiority winning the final 6 games. seems to me to lack the power of old, but played well in the doubles. lucy put up a great fight in the first set and to me is really progressing.
