Boys: European Summer Cups 2011 (U14/U16/U18)

The under 14s have kicked off the season of Summer Cups by surprisingly winning their qualifying group in Liege to earn a low seeding in this weekend's finals. The finals in Magaluf involve 8 nations, with the top 5 qualifying for the World Junior Team Finals in August. They open today against the host nation Spain, with the winners guaranteed a place in Pruhonice.  The team consists of Joel Connell, Lucas Taylor and  Ross-Tiree Wilson.

(4) GBR v Spain

The under 16s are in Spain aiming to qualify for next week's Borotra Cup, which in turn acts as a qualifier for the Junior Davis Cup, where we have done well for the last 2 years. Last year's team of Kyle Edmund, Luke Bambridge and Evan Hoyt has been nominated again, but the draw has not done us any favours. We have a bye into the semis, where we will face either Spain (perenially underranked, because most of their players choose a light schedule of ITF/TE events) or Portugal (who include a top 50 ITF player) without having chance to get used to the conditions..

The boys will need to hit form immediately tomorrow, when they play Spain in the semis. Their number 1 (Albert Alcaraz Ivorra) demolished top 50 player Frederico Ferreira Silva, and their doubles partnership reached the European Junior Championship finals (beating Evan and Josh)

In the under 18s there was a big upset for the team of Joshua Ward-Hibbert, Toby Martin and Oliver Hudson over the second seeds to reach the semis. Latvia (the Podzus twins) await

U18 GBR 3 (2) Romania 0

Toby won 6-4 6-4
Josh won 6-0 6-3 (against world no. 60 Teodor Marin)
(no details of doubles at present on the TE site)

The under 16s face an uphill task after Luke lost his opening singles (the match was scheduled for this afternoon/evening)

Kyle gets an impressive straight sets win over Alcaraz Ivorra (who has already won a couple of matches in ITF Futures) to level up at 1-1. Doubles will decide

A very good win. Playing Spain in Spain was the worst possible draw I think for any of the 8 teams seeded to reach the finals. They now play the second seeds Austria for the right to be seeded in Le Touquet next week

Under 16 SF

(1) GBR 2 (4) Spain 1

Luke lost to Carlos Benito Hergueta 4-6 6-2 4-6
Kyle beat Albert Alcaraz Ivorra 6-3 6-2
Kyle/Luke beat Alcaraz Ivorra/Benito Hergueta 6-3 6-4

Further good news as the under 18 team also qualifies for their final. They play Poland tomorrow to determine who will be seeded in La Rochelle next week.

Under 18 SF

GBR 2 Latvia 1

Toby won 6-3 7-6(2)
Josh lost 7-5 6-7(5) 4-6
Toby/Josh won 6-1 6-4

Evan came in for Luke and did a fine demolition job on the European Championship semifinalist putting the team on the path to earning a seeding, which is a good job as the other two under 16 powerhouse nations (Italy/France) also won their groups, so we avoid them in the key first round in next week's finals

Under 16 Qualifying Final

(1) GBR 3 (2) Austria 0

Evan beat Dominic Weidinger 6-2 6-0
Kyle beat Lucas Miedler 6-2 7-5
Kyle/Evan beat Miedler/Platzer 6-4 3-6 [10-7]

Meanwhile the under 18s stormed to the top of their group by an equally emphatic scoreline against Poland

GBR 3 (3) Poland 0

Oliver won 6-1 4-6 6-1
Toby won 6-4 7-5
Toby/Josh won 7-6(7) 7-6(4)

There are photos of Josh, Toby and the team (including captain Chris Wilkinson) at http://www.tenniseurope.org/photobook.aspx?id=7073

In the Under 16 finals in Le Touquet starting Monday the four seeded nations will be GBR, France, Germany and Italy. The four unseeded nations are Austria, Israel, Serbia and Ukraine. Winning the opening match will guarantee a place in the junior Davis Cup, and if the boys play to their potential then they should beat any of the 4 they could draw.

In the under 18 finals in La Rochelle France, GBR, Germany and Russia will be seeded. Belarus, Czech Republic, Poland and Sweden will be unseeded. The Czech Republic include world no. 1 Jiri Vesely

The draw for the under 16s has pitted GBR against Ukraine, who were hammered by Italy in singles, so I expect a comfortable passage. The other top nations, France and Italy, are in the opposite half, which should bolster our chances of making the final as last year.
