Boys & Girls: ITF Danish Junior Cup, Aarhus, Denmark - Grade 5 (Week 26)

Well, amongst all the excitment of liams terrific day at wimbledon today, Jonny O'mara is plugging away in the less glamourous environs of Denmark ITFs. His coaching team's decision to play here to get some match practice after some tough training is paying off rather too well! Order of play tomorrow has him down as definitley playing twice and possibly three times if he pulls off a win in the quarts of the singles. He and Nahir are again doing well in the doubles after last weeks win in Odense, so busy day ahead if it stops raining.

Ps. can I respectfully ask the organisers of next years odense tournie  that something just slightly more ambitious than a box of chocolates for the winners of an ITF u18 dubs would be a welcome addition to an otherwise good tournament!! ok I know its only a grade 4, but its a long and expensive trip for some chocolate!!

pps. Liam has been looking like the real deal for a number of years, but hes still young. lets hope hes left to develop his game without too much of the next Andy Murray type of pressure

Edited just to put the title into the usual format

RE: Boys: ITF Danish Junior Cup, Aarhus, Denmark - Grade 5 (Week 26)

I've been following Jonny's tweets about Denmark but hadn't made the link that there wasn't a thread for the Aarhus event yet - Wimbledon has rather taken over this week!

Great to see him doing well here though. I thought when he mentioned the chocolate, it didn't seem like the best prize ever - perhaps if he wins the doubles this week, they'll throw in a Happy Meal or a KFC bargain bucket (to continue on with the healthfood theme! LOL)

Re. Liam, I think his best chance of avoiding having too much pressure put on his shoulders is if Oli and George (and perhaps even some others) continue to make good progress too - over the last 12 months, one of those three seems to have stepped up most times the other two haven't done so well. Certainly, Liam seems to have been the most consistent of the three recently, and looked very good today, and interestingly he made the most progress of the three of them in the senior rankings before he started to have his biggest successes in the U18 events.

you make some good points there steven-especially about liam making some senior progress. I do wonder if some of our boys hang around the juniors a bit too long. Having a great junior career looks good no doubt but its making it in the senior game that really counts.

ploughing on with the danish theme amongst the wimbledon hullabaloo Jonny beat the number one seed comfortably this morn and is on a quick break before his doubles then the singles semi-so well done him. busy day of tennis allround, cmon Jonny, and Andy, and Liam

hey am I'm determined to keep this thread alive or what? Jonny won the semis, quick call, sounded fairly comfortable -think he lost a couple of games-buthe had to rush off for the doubles!

meanwhile at a small tournie in sw19 Liam won the first set and Andy still to come-and Ive got a friendly tonight . What a day of tennis!

Well done to Jonny, a busy and very successful day. Was  that 3 or 4 matches today ? I wasn't quite sure if he maybe played two doubles matches as well as two singles.

Anyway at least he was keeping his singles matches short and sweet, impressive stuff smile

yep-jonny won dubs and singles already! Tennis is a tough sport on juniors and the spanish guy had to pull out with a stomach prob and one of the dubs opponents wasnt in good shape either-Jonnys a bit gutted to win this way and was really looking forward to a tough day but a wins a win and hes worked hard this week to get in the position of taking both titles. Thats an 18-1 win/loss ratio over in denmark so the plan to get some matches under his belt after some tough training looks to be starting to pay off. hopefully with a few more points he can now start to look at tougher ITfs over the next two years but thats down to him and his coaching team.

Incidently jonny and liam won a doubles title in barcelona a few years back. Liams a year older and moved on quicker so big support from all of us today in the big one -hes a great kid. mentally very strong and does things his way which i like.

18-1 is a great ratio and very handy for gaining points. If he has success in Edinburgh/Newcastle over the next 2 weeks then he will be in a good position to enter higher grade events.

Good stuff

Yes, not the most satisfactory way of winning the titles in the end, but Jonny put himself in the position to benefit, so very well done.

These two titles should have him making a big move up the junior rankings to the low 500s.  Hopefully he can indeed gradually look to participate in tougher events.

yep idiana, thats roughly were I put him. I absolutely hate this chasing points lark, as I think i have said before its just the wrong way to develop a junior game but I understand at some stage he has to go through the process to gain entry into the higher grades-just wish there was a better way-as a junior it should be performance over winning every time-but thats the system and we have to play it i suppose-fortunately hes got a great coaching team and its such a help to have someone giving good advice whos been there and done that.
