Just realised that Anne gets 20 points for winning R1 here at an ITF but Naomi and Hev only got 15 points for winning R1 at Birmingham WTA. The draw is a different size, but still - you can see why some of the Brits chose Nottingham!

I'd been looking at the points through all the rounds and thinking similarly, Steven.
Birmingham has one more round, and ends up with a much higher title points, but if you look at points from Round 1, and remember the Birmingham field is generally much stronger from the off.
Birmingham : 15, 30, 70, 130, 200, 280
Nottingham : 20, 40, 80, 110, 150
There may be a separate arguement about what opposition you want to test yourself against as someone made re Bally ( though I still disagreed in her case given its her first grass court event of they year ). But for which is best re points v opposition, it's absolutely clear to me - Nottingham !
With the introduction of the Nottingham 100k and Copenhagen this week, I'm not sure Birmingham needs to have a 56 draw (unlike all the other International level tournaments). If it was reduced to 32 there would still be 8 more main draw places on grass across the tournaments and the qualifying draws might actually fill up.
Julia - as you were watching Laura yesterday, did you notice her showing any signs of the leg injury, and did she still have the bandage round her leg that she had in America? ___________________________________________________________
Nothing obvious. No bandage/strapping and no limping (thank goodness).
She seemed a bit tense though, right from the beginning. I saw a clip somewhere of her being interviewed after her 2nd round win the day before, and she looked really happy and positive. It was not quite the same 'persona' that came into that match. Maybe she woke up with a niggle in the old injury again or something.... who knows.
I also thought she seemed a bit low on energy, but maybe that was her being cautious with her movement. (In the light of what Phil said)
I may be free to see some tennis tomorrow. It seems her doubles with Anne will not get played today, so I might try to catch that. There again, Brum beckons also !!!

Just a bit strange, Phil, that you bounded on and started : "I think it is unfair to criticise Laura's performance" when we weren't criticising it. Maybe you anticipated folk would be
Anyway, moving on...
...I hope that you have enjoyed all the tennis you've been seeing. Wish it was closer to my neck of the woods. That said, you've travelled down a big distance.

You're probably right Indy. When I get back home and onto a less funereal internet connection I will put some flesh on the bones re: all the matches I have watched etc. Suffice to say it has been well worth the trip.
Decided to defect to Birmingham today (slightly better weather forecast). Really hope Anne and Laura have fun in their doubles match today and come away positive whatever the outcome.
