Had to go out after the tiebreak. Surprised he managed to win after the disappointments of the 2nd set. Huge win for him. Be interesting to see how the rest of the season goes for him after this.

Fantastic to see Wardy do that. Just like I was last year, I'm so impressed with the way he deals with setbacks - but now even more so.

He'll have a new CH in the 170s.

Is that all LOL.....what happens IF he makes the final....??

Roughly 150 if he makes the final and around 115 if he were to win the final.

Apologies to those of a sensitive nature, but this is the Daily Mail's take on today's two victories by James.  Decided to post the link for the benefit of our overseas readers, as the article includes a number of photos, including one which captures his exultant expression just after he'd clinched victory against Mannarino.  wink

A rather more informative article - for once - courtesy of The Grauniad.

The Grauniad article has betting odds from Blue Square on the right hand side.

Andy Roddick  6 / 5   vs  Andy Murray  8 / 13

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga  1 / 12   vs  James Ward   6 / 1

That represents a double of about  10.3 / 1  against 2 British finalists   ( I think you would have got slightly better odds on that at the beginning of the week  smile  )

I'm incredulous!  I stopeed watching after the tie break, but was aware he went to 2-0. I expected a swift descenet from there, and I need to get get dinner sorted. I was just sure Dino had blown his chance, and I didn't want to see him lose after such a valliant effort. I was certain he lost, I think I even had a dream were I saw the scoreline.

Another man who is going to be loving this is Diego the cage fighter, I bet the papers are full of him.  I ight even read some of them....

Cheers all, and keep going Dino!

Andrew Castle was on top form again for the match.

A couple of random items:

"Mannarino is a veteran of Challengers, Futures & Satellites." Doh, Mannarino is 22, and Satellites were scrapped about 7-8 years ago, dumbass.

(Interesting fact: Mannarino's first ever pro match was against his brother.)

In the post-match interview: Castle "It must be a long time since you won 4 matches in a row". Ward "Er, it was last week actually."

The guy is just lazy and thoroughly unprofessional. It must make the likes of John Motson, who was legendary for his careful research and preparation, cringe.

And grass courts - weird aren't they? Tennis is a game that rewards agility, explosive movement, and rapid direction changes - all of which require a very stable contact between the foot and the court. But grass courts are unpredictably slippery, and you can easily sense how they limit the players' freedom of movement.

And of course this evens up the ranking differences. Movement is possibly the crucial factor which differentiates the top players from the also-rans. It will be interesting to see whether Broady can take the likes of Peng to a third set tie-break on a hard or a clay court, and (dare I say it) whether Wardy can repeat his recent success in the other 49 weeks of the year.

 smile

I thought it was John Inverdale who asked the question about the 4 matches in a row? Not that he is much, if any, better than Castle.

which begs the inevitable,  when was the last time GB had 2 semi finalists in a main tour event ?

I didn't actually think that question was too bad, seeing as if he'd said "4 main draw matches" it would have been spot on

Great stuff from Ward. I think today may be one match too far but still amazing week for him. I hope he kicks on now towards the top 100.

Hopefully Andy (Murray) that is wins the title though

Just to add to that, although this happened a couple of other times with Greg and Tim, this is the first time since 1980 (at least) that it has happened without those two being the players involved.
