I really hope James can pick up some good grass form, very dangerous on it. 33 points already in two weeks has more than doubled his points tally for the year. Here's hoping he gets a good draw in both Eastbourne and Wimby!

Strange how after a relatively subdued few months compared with what most of us were expecting after the promise he'd shown last year, he now comes up with a result better than any of us probably expected. Hopefully this will properly kick-start his season (that confidence thing, Ratty! wink) even if it doesn't give much of a boost to his points total!

They've got to put him on Centre for R3 surely ... especially given the fact that the more likely a British player is to lose, the more likely they are to be televised.

Yes, it's good to see him building on his good results at Nottingham, like I said he would.

wow wow wow to that wardy win over wawa. celebrating the wimby wc in style! a shame no one outside of ct 9 could see it. i wonder how high do you think james would be ranked if tennis was only played on grass? top 100? higher even? after all, he's 16/4 on the lawns these past 2 years (counting davis cup).

i'm guessing this win also may serve to take some of the sting away for coxy from his r1 loss. funny that that article steven linked never once mentioned the score of that defeat haha. hopefully dan can take more heart and more confidence away from the fact that he lost to an in form player capable of a win like this on this surface.

I think grass is an odd surface for the modern game of tennis. People talk about the techniques needed to slide around on clay, but lots of players have trouble even keeping upright on grass, at Queen's in particular.

And I must confess to finding a lot of the play at Queen's rather ..... dull. Service holds are usually comfortable, and rallies are short or non-existent - so matches often therefore turn on a couple of points. Which I think is not really a true indication of the superior skill of the winner.

Oh that nightmare of the Roddick/Karlovic final in 2005!

(Of course, no doubt some indefatigable pedant - mention no names, Indiana - may swiftly prove that a greater proportion of service points are won at Roland Garros than at Queen's, but why let inconvenient facts get in the way of prejudice, I always say?)

James Ward!    Absolutely stunning win!  Who saw that coming, then?  Upset of the year for the (almost) also-rans of British tennis?  Whatever, great news to come home to.  Delighted for the lad.

Hi Ratty, ta for the namecheck, would you like me to to direct you to recent posts where I say I have really enjoyed the latter round matches at Roland Garros with what I found really interesting matches where players fight tactically for the initiative ?  Indeed I said I found these matches preferable to Wimbledon.

Don't assume I will always totally disagree with you when you speak a modicum of sense ( in fact I have publicly agreed with you on one or two things recently ), and that you are the only one who will ever challenge a maybe more general view   smile

That must be the best win by any brit this year?

I thought for a moment that it might be the best win in ranking terms of anyone including Muzza, but he did beat Ferrer ( WR 7 ) and Melzer ( WR 11 ) at the Australian Open.  Best win of anyone since.

Okay well....nah your wrong....this is the best win by any Brit this year....Murray WR4 beating WR7 and WR11 is no big surprise and we expect that...James Ward WR216 beating WR14 is truely special and the best win this year. I get your stato point but its not what i meant.
