back to the topic i think a defeat when you are so close to victory is the most disappointing, you've been good enough, you've got your self in the position and you've stumbled at the final hurdle. Sometimes though it's just that at that moment your opponent was just too good, too inspired.
losing to a lower/unranked player is a harder one to judge, there can be many reasons why a guy is lower ranked so it can be dangerous to read to much into it.

I agree, for the players themselves, it must be when you've put the hard work in to get yourself on the verge of a big win only to miss your chance(s) that it usually hurts the most.
Muzza getting so down after straight sets losses in the AO Finals at first sight suggests the opposite, but with that it's almost certainly disappointment at falling at the last hurdle having worked so hard to get to the Final in the first place.

The defeat that still leaves me with cold chills happened at Timbledon ten years ago.....Goran broke my heart....I thought Tim had it....I was over the moon....jumping around and then came the rain....the rain had helped Tim before, but boy did it hurt him then.....although a set and a break up at the French in 2004 was pretty close to a slam final too and maybe a slam final he would have won....beating Goran would have meant Rafter in the final and that was no gimmie.....but anyway....I think I am off point....but still a defeat that disappoints me....bloody rain.....
