RE: Mons 125K

Many thanks for the update!  I was tipped off it might be tomorrow! So the news was very welcome!

The word on the street is that Andy should cream Heuberger.  Well if he keeps up the form he showed at Bankok, Ivo has no chance!

Hi Tim, I agree that Andy on current form will beat Heuberger in straight sets. However, I don't think it will be a thrashing. Ivo is a very experienced campaigner and has played plenty of matches on the main tour. He is a serve-volleyer and likes fast surfaces so Andy will have to play well to beat him. Although I think Andy will win I wouldn't write off Ivo's chances. Andy has to adjust to a different time zone and a different surface wit probably just 1 day's practise.

So crookshanks you'll be able to see Andy play. Do you think you could do a report and photos ?

By the way Tim I've just looked at Heuberger's recent results - 2nd round in several challengers and I take back what I just said. I think Andy will cream him - he likes playing serve-volleyers as well.

Yes, this has not been a good year for him.  Don't know why. How old is he? (10 years pro, I think) Entry Ranking 192 but has been much, much better.

Off Topic:-  The BBC Tennis board is shut (over an hour ago) and I wondered if there were any posters left this time of night?

I had a look at the seeds at Mons and I have a huge respect for Ivo K. (Serve from the trees).

Is there any one who could give Andy any grief?

Yes

Andy has a very difficult draw really. If he is jet-lagged Heuberger, or indeed anyone, could be a problem. It is not uncommon for upsets in the first round when one player has been playing at the weekend then had to travel long distances.

Both Carraz and Dupuis have beaten Andy this summer. Dupuis' best results are on faster surfaces and so too Carraz. On a good serving day either could beat Andy in straight sets on this surface.

Xavier Malisse is a decent player and would be the favourite for a match against Andy.

Karlovic has a huge serve and is very difficult to break. One poor service game from Andy and the match could be gone.

While Andy may well be the class player in the field, this is a tournament that attracts players that are effective on this surface. Andy will have to return very well if he is to make it to the weekend in Mons.

Yes.  Maybe a week on the Thai beeches & good Thai food would have been a better deal!

I'm concerned that over-playing brings on long term injury.

Will he dip out of the US Sacramento challenger?  All that travel seems a bit of a killer...?

If he's sensible he will pull out of Sacramento and stay in Europe for the Kolding Challenger. All that travelling will take an awful lot out of him and it isn't worth it for a 50K. Another surface and another timezone. It just wouldn't be good. But who knows, it's up to Andy and his schedulers. I heard that after this week, Andy's family and Mark Petchey are going to sit downand discuss his schedule for the rest of the season.

Kundalini is right, Andy is really going to have to return well this week. Heuberger and Dupuis/Carraz are all serve-volleyers with great games for fast indoor courts. Dupuis would be probably the most dangerous as he has got the best baseline game out of the 3. Malisse hasn't got the power of a Ginepri or Srichaphan but he more than makes up for that with style and finesse. His game is built around a pretty big forehand. On his day he can trouble most of the top ten apart from maybe Federer or Nadal. Karlovic doesn't tend to get such good results off the grass which suggests that maybe his serve isn't as effective. Remember, Mackin had match point against him in Milan earlier this year. Andy would need to hit his passing shots well and play good tiebreaks [which he has been doing for most of the time].

Hi fellas, I have just got home.  I must admit I was surprised at the quality of entries in this Challenger; as you have discussed, Andy could well trip up early in the tournament.  He must be feeling not only tired and jet-lagged, but the come-down of adrenalin at having to come back to the Challenger after the euphoria of getting through to face Fed in an ATP event must be considerable.

I must say I have just had a laugh at the report on the BBC site that Andy has "chosen" to play at Mons instead of the Madrid qualies.  Not a lot of choice in it!

Isn't "after this week" a bit late to consider his schedule? Isn't Sacramento next week? Or am I getting muddled?

Agree Madeleine, could be tough for Andy. At least he has a couple of days to recover.

Sacramento is next week. I suppose they must have meant during the Mons tournament or maybe today or tomorrow before he plays his round 1 match.

Weird website for this tournament; I can't find any results on it at all! Entries, OOP, etc, but no results. I did find a link on MTF that takes you to a Belgian Mens Tennis site which not only has results but a live score!

Sacramento is crackers!  Not worth the airfair for Team Murray even if its just two of them!

Dec 31st is close, so a #meeting# seems a bit OTT!
