Really great week for Emily, though certainly seems to more than met her match in the final.  She will be up to about WR 270 in the rankings and level on ranking points with Laura, the GB No 6.

I recalled and have reread her getting some stick in the forum in the thread for her first tournament of the year in India.  This was re such as she was just going along buying ranking points by searching out easier tournaments, and would just get well beaten when she met stronger opposition, maybe time just to shift to doubles etc.  It is fair to say there were some alternative views to that  smile

But anyway, I don't think anyone could really have forecast how well her results would have gone since ( she was ranked WR 436 going into that January tournament )

I certainly do get the impression that she can spot a good points opportunity, eg, going out to the Johannesberg 100K a few week sago. And why not. There are some players who I think could maybe benefit by thinking more about their schedule.

However, she has undoubtably really picked up her game and her results have been impressive.  I began really to take notice in early March in Sanya in China when she hammered Mestach, the junior world no 1  6 - 0  6 - 2  before losing a tight 3 setter to Buyukakcay ( TUR )  WR 175  ( who was in later weeks to have 2 reasonably competitive matches with Laura )

Her results as against rankings of players this year do really suggest she is not on the rise through any fluke :

Top 200  :   Won 0   Lost 2

201 - 300  :   Won   4    Lost 3

301 - 400  :   Won   3    Lost 2

> 400  :   Won 10   Lost  1

The 2 losses to top 200 players were very tight scorelines.  The one loss to a player outside the top 400 was to Saisai Zheng (CHN), then WR 594, a heavy  6 - 0  6 - 2  defeat in that first tournament of the year.  Of course, Emily got firm revenge in the QFs this week on a young player who has risen to WR 327 through a lot of pretty good results.

Everything says she is a player who well deserves her return well into the top 300 and closing in on her career high.  Long may it continue, indeed get better.

Losing a set 6-1 when you make just 4 ues - now that's tough!

Pics of all three Brits - EWS at the singles presentation (she seems to have won a fluffy kangaroo ...), Emily and Katie playing, plus both of them and (I assume) Nicola at the player party. They may not thank me for posting this link, but there you go wink.gif
