She was saying to Mel that she couldn't slide in sludgy conditions. De Gubernatis was in top form and maybe she underestimated her having won so easily before. She had a very tough draw, given the strength of the field . There was a local newspaper who have been reporting on the tournament which had a couple of quotes from Laura following yesterdays match which included the line ' it was a bit up and down and at times I made 5 mistakes in a row.' That tells me it wasn't a high quality match. But bottom line its a match she should really be winning. At least it wasn't a retirement and with more matches under her belt she can only improve.
I knew that would happen. It should have been time to make hay.
In theory, heavy conditions should suit her. As being powerful should enable her to 'hit through' the conditions, right?
I think faster conditions would suit her better, and thats probably one of the reasons why they chose to play in America rather than on the slower red clay surfaces in Europe.
To their opponents, my best guess is that she knew the final being on Sunday would give her little time to travel, get prepared for her next tournament so she withdrew. Would be surprised if there was an injury problem.
Or I thought it may have been down to Gallovits who had to play 3 sets to win her match earlier (which was a slight surprise) - perhaps she has some 'niggle' or something.
