Week 16 Challenger - Napoli, Italy - €30K+H (Clay)

Cox and Slabba were meant to be on the qualifying list here but Slabba can't have made it to sign-in because he was playing in Madrid today and Dan has tweeted that he is off to Mexico next week, perhaps for altitude training (in which case Evo will be GB no 3 on Monday week), since there are neither Challengers nor Futures there next week.

"Mexico next week altitude here we come again"

That leaves us with:

QR1: Dan Smethurst WR 510 v (q5) Nicolas Devilder (FRA) WR 365

The man who sounds like he should be at home on the Devildust (and is - he has reached 12 of his 13 Challenger Finals on the surface) hit a career high of 60 in Sep 2008 and has reached R2 of all slams except the AO during his career.

A name to conjure with?  A German player who rejoices in the name of Valentino (rather appropriate for an Italian Challenger!) Pest (who?) has just won the first-set tie-break by 10-8 in QR1 against an Italian of whom I've also never heard, Marco Zotti.  I'm a little surprised he hasn't thought of changing it, as Pest means "plague" or "epidemic in German! wink

Well done, Dan  smile

Hopefully he can get the win and into the main draw.

No points so far and only 3 for qualifying. So often Challenger qualifying can seem to offer a poor return compared to what can be won in Futures.

At least the q1 seed, who was originally in Dan's section, was moved into the main draw so hopefully that helps. Sousa has played one less match since in Q2 he managed to overcome the winner of Bye vs Bye ( also called Bye ).
