Boys: V Torneo ITF Junior Benicarlo, Spain - Grade 3 (Week 14)

Spanish based Joshua Ward-Hibbert starts a series of events on home soil which if he does well could propel him into the top 100

R1 (L32)

(7) Joshua Ward-Hibbert (GBR) v (Q) Jose Fco. Vidal Azorin (ESP)

I did a bit of research on Joshua and was pleasantly surprised to find out he is a top junior basketball player as well.

I'm a big basketball fan, so thought this was pretty cool. A simple google search provides you with a whole list of articles.

He represented England last year at the under 16 Euros and wasn't just some bench player, but rather one of the stars.

I don't know if he has made a commitment to one sport yet, but one thing is for certain--his athleticism is immense. A 6'4 guard. Nice.

Josh's elder brother Matt(hew) also plays basketball at a high level, currently on a US university scholarship. Having two fields of sporting excellence can be a mixed blessing, the second being simultaneously a distraction and a fallback option if the first doesn't work out.

I assume that at the moment tennis is first choice, as he is a full-time member of a Spanish academy, and he has passed the first test here:

R1 (L32)

(7) Joshua Ward-Hibbert (GBR) d. (Q) Jose Fco. Vidal Azorin (ESP) 7-5 6-2

R2

(7) Joshua Ward-Hibbert (GBR) v Alexander Babanine (AUS)

Now comes the hard part for Josh - a battery of Spaniards starting with someone who is top 100 and ATP ranked

R2

(7) Joshua Ward-Hibbert (GBR) d. Alexander Babanine (AUS) 7-5 6-3

QF

(7) Joshua Ward-Hibbert (GBR) v (2) Oriol Roca Batalla (ESP)

Josh couldn't get past the first Spaniard, but had more luck in the doubles - he and partner riding into the final, courtesy of a retirement

Doubles Final

(1) Alvarez Llamas / Roca Batalla (ESP) v (2) Merckx / Ward-Hibbert (BEL/GBR)

Josh continues an unfortunate record of having reached 6 doubles finals and lost the lot
