Weeks 12/13 - ATP 1000 series: Miami (outdoor hard) - doubles

Here's a turn-up for the books (the second pairing, not the first wink ):

R1:  Xavier Malisse (BEL) & Jamie Murray vs Yen-Hsun Lu & Florian Mayer (TPE/GER)

R1:  Sergiy Stakhovsky & Mikhail Youzhny (UKR/RUS) vs Novak Djokovic & Andy Murray disbelief

At least they're in opposite halves of the draw...

Hardly a propitious start for the fledgling partnership:

R1:  Sergiy Stakhovsky & Mikhail Youzhny (UKR/RUS) defeated Novak Djokovic & Andy Murray by 5-7 6-3 [10-8] cry

First set in the bag by 7-6(1) (Jamie & Xavier were broken in the eleventh game, but broke back immediately to take the set into a tie-break! smile ).

Going back on the discussion with Phil from the IW thread...

Miami doubles stats so far...

Doubles specialist pairings 7-0 Singles player pairings

Pairings with one singles player and one doubles player 3-0 Singles player pairings

So if a doubles specialist has been on the same court as a singles player he has not yet lost.

And this is a great doubles point (pity about the ending) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHLHQjkcBbk

I agree the doubles specialists have had the upper hand this time around, which of course is a relief for them.
However you have to agree that singles specialists play doubles for a bit of fun and match practice so you would like to think they should lose more than they win.
Saying that when the doubles really matters, say at the Olympics, the top singles players I bet will come out on top.
And yes that point was definitely one for the highlight reel and better than the one from the final last week. It also sums up where Andy is at the moment with that last shot, not a happy place.

*sigh*

So when the singles guys lose they just don't care. I'm not really going to dignify that with much of a response, dubs guys just can't win in that scenario.

So the Olympics.... in Beijing 3 of the 6 medalists were doubles specialists.

There was only 7 doubles specialist pairs out of 32 in the entire event, plus another 7 playing with a singles player and two of the best doubles players (Knowles and Nestor) had to play with weak singles players. Singles players were given priority for entry and thus avalanched the draw.

5 of the 7 doubles specialist pairs made it through the first round. 4 out of the 5 of the doubles specialist pairs had to face each other in the second round. So only three of them went through because of the draw. From there Federer/Wawrinka knocked out two of them whilst the Poles lost to Aspelin (doubles specialist) and Johansson who went on to reach the final.

Two standout matches:
R1: Melo/Sa beat Berdych/Stepanek 5-7 6-2 8-6 - two not even top end dubs guys beating a pair that have an excellent record in DC doubles.
3rd/4th place play-off: Bryan/Bryan beat Clement/Llodra 3-6 6-3 6-4 - two of the best singles doubles players of recent times being beaten.

Overall doubles specialst pairs went 4-2 against singles pairs

OK then there are alot of examples of top doubles players beating singles players in doubles.
The one final thing I will say is that on the ladies side the Williams sisters dominate the doubles events when they play and the current number 1 pairing is Dulko/Pennetta.
I think its fair to say that we will never agree on this subject.
