RE: Week 12 - Futures F9 ($10K) - Barcelona, Spain - Clay

The score was 1 and 2. I think what I'm to trying to say is that Liam already seems mature enough to make progress up the senior ranks, from what he says on twitter compared to Oli and George. Just an impression because I have never watched him play, heard him talk etc.,.

Liam's next opponent is old enough to be his dad. He spent five years in the top hundred, but before this week he hadn't won a match for almost five months.

I'm amazed that Antony Dupuis (Liam's next opponent) is still playing, given that he is 38 and having to play Futures after spending a number of years on the Tour. Even when he was successful (he won at least one Tour title) he looked a burly figure who you wouldn't want to cross in a dark alley, and I guess he won't be any slimmer now.

Hehe.

Now I'm not disagreeing with your assertion--I do believe Liam has shown more promise in the senior game relative to the other two,  but just wanted to let you know how inane that part of your post came across as.

Peace.smile

Inanity can be my strong point sometimes. ( thats probably not a word );)
So you didn't get the gist of what I was saying.
My only defence is that English Language was my worst subject at school.

Oh I got the gist, my friend (and I also agreed with it based on the results thus far). I was simply implying never to read too deep into tweets (although I know you're a fond 'tweeter'). For example, some can be self deprecating in an attempt to lower expectations, or they may just be attempting to be facetious. But I will agree that it is best never to give off negative vibes, but many young tennis players on twitter won't understand that.

QF:  Liam Broady & Giorgio Portaluri (ITA) WR 1862 vs (3) Marc Fornell & Mike Vermeer (ESP/LUX) WR 1299

Bet the Luxemburger paints a pretty picture! wink

There was a ding-dong battle in the second quarter of the top half of the draw.  Get a load of this:

R1:  (4) Nacho Coll & Juan Lizariturry (ESP/ESP) WR 1308 lost to Carlos Calderón & Marc Giner (ESP/ESP) UNR by 7-6(5) 6-7(5) [23-25]! disbelief

L16: (Q) Liam Broady beat Antony Dupuis (FRA) WR 493 (CH 57 in 2001) by 3 & 1 biggrin

As mentioned on the media thread, Liam's doubles partner from the Zurich exo played Dupuis four times between 2001-5 and never managed to limit him to just 4 games.

Even if we consider the Dupuis career high completely irrelevant, handing down such a thrashing to a top 500 player is no mean feat smile.gif

According to Liam's tweet, reported on the LTA site, he beat Dupuis by 3 & 1 & handled the conditions very well ([wind] blowing in all directions! wink )! biggrin  Lost his doubles match (with Portaluri) 1-6 6-7(?), though. cry  The Argentine fourth seed, Juan Pablo Villar (WR 422), or the Croat, Borut Puc (WR 547), in the QF.

QF: (Q) Liam Broady WR 798 v (4) Juan Pablo Villar (ARG) WR 422 (CH 273 in Oct 07)

Villar has picked up the vast majority of his points in the last 12 months in the relatively weak Futures in Brazil and had gone out in R1 of his first two Futures in Europe this year. Unfortunately, he now seems to have adjusted, because having lost 4 & 1 to Kubler last week, he beat in 1 & 3 in R1 here!

Oddly, Villar nearly always plays doubles with Portaluri (sic), the guy Liam has been playing doubles with this week.

Huh, this Liam boy provisionally dropping in the British rankings this week behind some doubles specialist guy   wink

Great stuff again by Liam.  Colin and him now provisionally GB 18th and 19th, hopefully to close further a big gap that has existed after Marcus Willis in 17th.

seeing as broady plays his QF friday, does that mean he will get a SE next week, and save himself from the 128q draw, seeing as the qualifying will begin friday?
