Cricket World Cup

Yardy is the latest contestant to be voted off Survivor - http://www.espncricinfo.com/icc_cricket_worldcup2011/content/story/507748.html Hope he gets better soon, though. This is a terrible thing to happen. Davies.... PLEASE!

Yes, in cricketing terms I was rather unsure what Yardy offered.

But that is not good for him and I hope with the right help he can get better soon.  Whilst often no doubt difficult to know how collectively and individually to respond, I notice that this seems to have been announced much more straightforwardly then when Trescothick first had issues.

It's interesting that rates of depression and suicide seem to be so much higher in cricket than in other sports. One would expect tennis, where earning a living is more difficult as are the number of weeks a person spends away from home, to have a higher rate, but that's not the case.

Just a gut feeling, haven't got stats or anything - Thorpey, Tresco and Yardy are recent high profile depression cases plus David Bairstow and Mark Saxelby have taken their lives in the recent past, off the top of my head.

Oops !

South Africa collapse gainst New Zealand after half way through their innings being well on course to reach a very gettable target.

Not like them to flatter to deceive  !    wink

So it's a semi final in Colombo :  Sri Lanka or England  vs  New Zealand.

Trott does his usual thing then. 2 boundaries in 115 balls in an ODI - words fail me... And don't even get me started on Bopara and Bell.

Nothing will change, I am quite sure. This summer, Anderson will win England a couple of pointless ODIs and everyone will say how he has finally become a good ODI bowler. Trott will also win a couple of matches and everyone will say that limited over matches are not all about fours and sixes. And the same thing will be repeated in 2015, but under the captaincy of Cook.

I completely disagree. Strauss, Bell, KP, Bopara, Morgan, Prior and Swann are in the team to hit boundaries.

Trott is there to drop anchor and get big 50s/100s at a strike rate of 75-90%.

The problem is not Trott who has had a sensational 6 months. The problem is the rest of the ODI team.

And Anderson isn't even playing in today's debacle so why mention him.

No other squad has lost their both their best bowler and batsman during this world squad.

Also, domestically in the last couple of years Cook has been very good in the shorter formats smashing some handy hundreds - the myth that he scores slowly uses 2 year old data.

Yes, they have been badly handicapped with injuries. Any team would struggle if they lost Flintoff, KP and Broad in a short span.

But I just don't see the point of a sheet anchor in an ODI side. There's not a single good ODI team around which has a sheet anchor. Guys like Trott/Bopara/Denly are about the worst team players imaginable - if they do badly, you're doomed because you've lost a wicket; if they score big, you're doomed because they've wasted 40 balls. I don't see anyone like that in Australia or India or Sri Lanka. South Africa have Kallis but what have they won anyway? I do think having Trott in the WC was the right move (because there weren't better players) but the person has no clue about how to play limited overs cricket.

The hundreds that Cook smashed have come against some terrible attacks. Just look at the attacks except for the Hants one -

He will face attacks far stronger than that even against Bangladesh and Ireland!!

Leaving stats aside, I just know that Cook will score slowly in limited overs matches. cry.gif He was selected to play T20s in South Africa after a great domestic season in 2009. England were chasing a ridiculous 242 but instead of going gung ho, Cook got 26 in 21 balls without playing a heave in anger, while Trott got 51 off 40 balls. I know that 242 was not impossible to chase, but innings like those tell a LOT about the mentality of cricketers.

Edit: I meant "impossible to chase", haha!

So for the fifth straight time, the team with the most power packed top order wins the WC. Shocking, huh? Hopefully Flower and co. will realise that this isn't a coincidence and stop selecting the shotless wonders, pea hearts, and batting average boosters, but I won't count on it.

We did win the T20 last year but that seems like a long time ago now.

Yes, they know how to play test cricket, and they know they have to go all out in Twenty20, but do seem to get a bit tied in knots with 50 over cricket.

The prep wasn't great but there still does seem quite a bit of wooly thinking.

They didn't just randomly learn to play T20s, though. They got rid of the match losers like Denly, Trott, Prior and Shah and replaced them by Kies, Lumb, Morgan etc. I remember that I used to have rants about the T20 team on here during most tournaments. And it would have been nice if I had posted this on April Fools', but it's hard to believe that two months before the T20 triumph, this was England's opening pair - http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/440946.html

Kies, Lumb, KP, Colly, Morgan, Wright, Bresnan : Forget match winners, can you name a single player out there who is going to lose you a match by playing for himself? Plus England decided not to pick the pacer who has probably proportionally conceded 7+ runs an over in ODIs more than anyone in history (he certainly must be near the top).

England have been stuck in the 1980s when it comes to ODIs. The management doesn't mind it if you push and prod to a 40 off 60 balls since that apparently shows you can "build an innings" and can be a good Test match player, and the media will tell you that. But how dare you play shots, you overambitious buffoon! That's not the way we scored and got to the WC finals in 1979!

Only in England will a player like Ali Brown get just 16 ODIs to prove himself but someone like Hussain will get 88. Only in England will Mal Loye get just 7 ODIs and get dropped even after showing a lot of guts agains the greatest ODI attack of all time, but Michael Vaughan, Bell and Joyce will go to a World Cup.
So it shouldn't shock us that in 2010-11, Kieswetter will get dropped a few months after being MOTM in a WC final, Davies will get dropped after 4/5 bad matches but Bopara will have played 60 ODIs already despite having an average less than 30 with a highest of 60 and a strike rate of 72. And most of these geniuses in the media are penning articles about how a young lad like Bopara should be one of the players in the England side in 2015.

Yeh i seem to think that the problem with one day cricket in england is traditional issue. The old farts at lords members etc want a traditional test innings with a strike rate of 10 of 100 balls, they dont want this baseball chaos.

thats my theory anyway

It seemed rather obvious for the last few weeks bu saddens me all the same. The same cycle is being repeated and England will probably retain Prior, too, at this rate. I want to listen to the logic of picking someone who wasn't part of the WC 15 even though around 200 people were selected.

I thought Strauss was a dud choice when he was returned to the odi side in 2009, so I hope I'm wrong but I just can see anything positive with Cook, Bopara, Bell and Trott there. I am predicting that they'll beat SL and India and home but lose 0-5 to India later this year unless KP is back to form.

My predictions on this board have mostly consisted of embarassing punts like predicitng someone ranked 500 to end up in the top 100 at the end of the year, but this one went okay.

I wonder if someone has ever considered it, you know, that maybe Bopara isn't good enough right now and it's time to reassess after 2 seasons of domestic cricket? But I expect him to audtion for Tests by scoring 40 off 50 balls in the T20 and then all his fans in the media will ask for him to be in the Test side.

There was an opportunity in April to take some hard decisions but the chance was missed. There's an opportunity again but it probably involves making himself less popular in the dressing room so it's time to see what Flower is made up of.

Are you still anti Cook in ODIs or just him and Trott together?
